So I am a mother of identical twin girls who are absolutely adorable but I am having trouble nursing them now. I just successfully nursed them through a painful bout of mastitis but now since they started crawling that is their new favorite thing to do. I understand why it is that they are more interested in exploring than in mommy boobs but since they are not eating as usual they are waking up several times a night because they are hungry, therefore not sleeping well and then therefore more whinny. What is a mama to do. I'm frustrated because what used to be a relaxing and enjoying time with my girls is now tiring and exhausting chasing after them to bring them back to the bresat to eat. Will they grow out of this as the novelty of crawling wear off a little and get back to regular nursing or is this what I have to look forward to for a while? Any suggestions? Thanks to all you little mamas out there.

Definently a nursing necklace/nursing beads and a quiet dimly lit room. Its a phase... they are exploring on thier own now and they will come back to nursing full time. Don't stress too much. I know its hard though when you are up all night and exhausted.

Congrats on nursing your twins!

Hi J.. It became difficult for me to nurse my son when he got to this age (he's 10 months old now). What works best for me is to take him to a quiet room, usually our bedroom, where there are no toys or people to distract him. It doesn't work 100 percent of the time, but it certainly helps when nothing else does. Good luck!

I bought a nursing necklace full of all sorts of different color and shaped beads when my first was this age for the same reason. I would wear it only when nursing and it was something he could concentrate on that would hold his attention while nursing. It's something to try...just google nursing necklaces. Here's the first site I found when I just did it: http://www.mommynecklaces.com/

Best of luck and congratulations on your nursing twins this far! I've nursed both of my children until 15 months...but only one at a time. I really admire nursing mothers of twins!

Hi J.,
It's great you're nursing your twins. I used to take my kids (singles) into a different room. At that age the dogs, big brother, daddy...were always more interesting than me. They each grew out of it and went back to nursing. I nursed each of them until they were 2. Obviously as they got over about 14 months they were weaned down to bedtime only. i like the nursing necklace idea. I wish I had known about them when I was nursing! Sounds like a great new mom gift. Good luck and it's so great to hear you are nursing twins:)

I love all the suggestions you already received. This happened to my son around this age. I was told that they grow a lot both physically and mentally around this time so the night waking may have nothing to do with them nursing less. Not sure if it was the case, but eventually it changed. Congrats and don't give up. You will make it through!!

J., I applaud your effort to nursing twins! That is just awesome, way to go mom :)

My daughter is 7 months old now and she too is going through this phase. My oldest went through it as well. I bring her into a dimly lit room and keep all distractions away from her while she is feeding. I also have started giving her more solids during the day and a little bit more at night before her last nursing when she is getting ready for sleep. It has worked well for us, and it worked well for my first daughter too.
