My son is now 13 months. I have a 3 year old girl and I am a girl (duh) so the whole girl private parts thing is a no brainer but now that I have a son I'm finding myself at a bit of a loss related to all things "down there".

First, I would say in the last 2 months or so when he has a dirty diaper and I'm wiping him (getting under and around all parts necessary) he seems to be having an erection. Maybe it's normal so young? I don't know but it kind of freaks me out. Is that supossed to happen so soon?

Also, the last day or two when I'm wiping him down and he seems to get this erection he's immediately starts screaming in what seems like pain. I'm so shaken up by, one the fact that my 13 month old seems to be HAVING erections and two, that he's screaming like he is in pain that I just hurry up and finish and get that diaper back on and he seems fine. Has anyone expereinced this stuff and if so what do you think the problem is that makes him cry like he's being hurt.

Some background info: He has been cirucmsized and it seemed a little bit of a loose circ but the doctor assures me that he'll grow into it and it looks like he is. He just had his 12 month visit and I know the doctor checked out that area and did not say there was anything to watch for (couldn't bring myself to mention the erection part, he wasn't our normal doctor) I do briefly look and I don't see anything really alarming that would be causing pain but I don't own one of those things and am not in the habit of closely inspecting my husbands (your laughing aren't you?) so maybe I'm missing something? Also when he was 2 months old he had a hernia surgery which went well and we haven't had any issues since.

Any thoughts/advice you have would be welcome.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Great advice. Thanks ladies. I will call the doctor about the pain part.

For the record, maybe I didn't express myself properly. I'm not freaked out really, I mean I KNOW it's something that's gonna happen and I'm not quesy about stuff like that, it's just that I didn't expect it now and well it is a little outside my comfort level having had a girl and myself having no siblings, lets just say it's very new to me. No I don't flip out and run screaming from the room, my facial expression doesn't change and I would never let my son feel it was abnormal or give him any reason to feel shame. I guess I was just thrown off by it happening at one year of age, I didn't expec that until at least potty training time! Thanks again for the wonderful advice and support!

Totally normal, the erection thing. I have 2 boys and it is absolutely nothing sexual until teenage years hit. If he even touches it, it just "feels good" but nothing to be concerned with. HE IS PERFECTLY NORMAL :)

The erection thing is totally normal and yes,as a parent of a boy, who grew up with all sisters and first child was a girl, it was all new to me, too. I don't remember the screaming part but your other posts have commented about it so that sounds normal too. I would always follow your instincts and bounce your concerns off of your (regular!) pediatrician too. Good luck.

As far as the erection part....totally normal. My son has been getting alot of those lately, and he also cries out like it hurts. My girlfriends son does the same thing. I guess it feels weird and maybe does hurt a little bit for them. I would not worry about it at all.

My son is almost 3 and gets erections. I believe it is perfectly normal. I notice that he gets them after he wakes up. I do remember him crying a bit when he was younger and he got them. I asked a few friends with boys at the time and their sons got them too.

my boy did too, think they all do. hubby told me not to 'push it down' when its erect to put the diaper on cuz it could hurt. so i leave it up and eventually the diaper leaks. ha ha ha. i don't have one so i don't know!

Totally normal and you have to get over it....once you start potty training you see them all the time. I think when they go potty it happens because of the pressure and they get them. I see one daily and my son is 27 months. Welcome to boys ;)

Make sure the screaming isn't coincidental....maybe he doesn't want to have his diaper changed. If not talk to the doctor.

Boys are actually having erections when they are just a few days old, I think it has something to do with a full bladder. I think getting freaked out is the worst thing to do. It's natural and hopefully he doesn't see you getting freaked out, you don't want him being ashamed of something he has no control over. Just wait until he's a teen! I feel it's just part of having a boy. If you're concerned about the pain then call your doctor, seriously I'm sure they've heard a lot worse.

Not sure about the screaming bit, but little boys randomly get erections all the time. It's totally normal. ...and my son screams whenever I change his diaper, erection or not. Are you sure the two events are related (erection/screaming)?
