Boring Question About Mattresses

We may need new mattresses but I'm a bit torn. I feel like growing up, we kept mattresses FOREVER. I'm not sure I ever got a new one... So how long do you keep yours? We have a queen one that is about 11 years old and has been used pretty consistently. Time to go? Also, do you have full or twins for your kids? It seems like the trend is for fulls but I grew up with a twin. If you got a full for your kids, why? Our bedrooms are decent sized but not enormous at all. I feel like the space could be better used but I also feel like I'm missing something as I think most of my kids' friends have fulls. Thanks!

What can I do next?

If it's still comfortable and does not stink then it sounds like it's okay to keep using. I don't really thing that much about what's under the mattress pad and sheets. It does not touch me. I think that it's just a way to sell more mattresses.

My boys have twins. One set of bunk beds and one single twin. I like twins for kid's rooms.

My husband and I have had our queen for almost 12 years - YIKES. I keep seeing all these mattress comercials that say to get rid of them after 8 years. . . we have vacumed it, but it is getting a little worn, but until I move and can get a king, we won't be tossing it.

Eh. I guess it is whatever works.:)

My dad has the same king mattress set he had when they got married which had mom not died would have been 51 years.

He is a bit of a tightwad mind you.

I can't say my last purchase was a rational one. I got rid of my 10 year old king five years ago because I hated my bedroom furniture after my divorce. This one I think I will keep for 20 years unless my husband talks me into a tempurpedic.

What was your question again?

this is tough because everyone deals with mattresses differently.

My grandmother has had her mattress for 20 years...she (with my father's help) flips it every month.

Our mattress is 17 years old and in DESPERATE need of replacement!!! We are in the market and looking. Just haven't made a decision. We were close to do buying a sleep number bed - my parents own one and some of friends own them...love-hate relationship....and it's a lot of money - $1500 for a mattress and it is supposed to last 15 to 20 years...

My boys - my youngest has a bunk bed - so two twin mattresses. My oldest had a futon bunk - 8" futon with springs on the "couch" and traditional mattress on top. My daughter's first bed was a full sized bed - she went from the crib to the full sized bed. My oldest son went to a full sized first then we bought him the bunk bed - this is his second one...

I'm going through mattress trauma, so I had to weigh in. We had our first mattress approximately 10 years, and then, when I was pregnant I found I was having hip pain from sleeping on one side so much. We bought another, softer bed. Then I ended up co-sleeping, so ended up on the old bed, and he ended up on the newer bed. We FINALLY put back the new bed, and I got a few months on it, and my husband accepted a hand-me down king (I really didn't want him to do it.) We made it 10 days before we got delivery on another new bed, gave away the 13 year old Queen, and moved the 4 year old Queen downstairs as a guest bed (on my beautiful sleigh bed). The new bed was defective, so tomorrow we get our third attempt by the company to give us a bed that doesn't suck.

Meanwhile, my uber-comfortable queen lives downstairs, without me.

Sorry, that was more a rant than informative. But I have to say, I would even prefer the 13 year old queen to what we have now. ARGH!

If you are still comfortable, don't waste the money on a new bed. If you are starting to be uncomfortable, go lie on some new beds and see if you can find something you like in your price range. - there advice, instead of just whining about MY bed situation (which is really bad). I think I'll go sleep downstairs, now that I think about it.

My daughter has a hand-me-down twin from my first daughter (who used it for around 5 years total). When she's a little older we'll eventually get her another twin. Her room might hold a full, but it would be tight. But fulls are nice if they want a sleep-over. Of course, you can have a trundle for that, or something like that.

My daughter has a full and my son a twin. My son's room just can't accommodate a full even though it's only a bit bigger, his room is just too small. I like the full way better! It's big enough to all snuggle in and read stories, have sleepovers, etc.

I think that kids don't need mattresses quite as often b/c they just aren't as heavy and I can't imagine that they break down as quickly. Yes there is the issue of sweat and dead skin, but overall, I think they can last twice as long as an adult mattress, at least. If you can lay on their beds and think they are reasonably comfortable, then I say there are okay to keep.

When I bought "big kid" beds for my kids the full was only $20 more than the twin. I figured I might as well as get the bigger bed so I don't have to buy a bigger one in a few years. Then queen was only $50 more than the twin, but that was way too big. I wonder if manufacturers are trying to weed out twin mattresses with the crazy pricing structure.

I am intending to buy my kids all organic mattresses when I move them up to big-kid beds, and those things cost an arm and a leg! I fully intend the mattress to last the duration of their childhoods! They can get new ones when the go to college, like I did growing up! We use heavy-duty mattress-covers to avoid dirtying mattresses, and I've always kind of felt that you really know when you need a new one, because you can feel it.

I think fulls are just a bit nicer, and lately, it's trendy to spoil your kids a bit. I understand the desire, but I can't justify the extra expense, so my kids will probably be getting twins.
