You can put it in bread to make it very moist. I have a recipe for sweet potato bundt cake, which is amazing. (It's gluten free, but nobody would ever be able to tell because of how moist and yummy it is.)
Hi Mamas! So I bought this sweet potato which I have boiled until tender and when I tasted it I was not pleased :-( Not only is it not sweet at all, but it's also starchy in the mouth...what to do to "save" it? I was going to use it as a dessert after dinner..ideas?
Thanks in advance!

I agree that you should bake it next time. But for now my suggestions are sweet potato biscuits or muffins/bread. Both are delicious and we love them. You can use mashed sweet potato as a substitute for mashed pumpkin in most recipes that are baked.
.
No wonder you're disappointed. A sweet potato is not sweet. It lends its self to sweet recipes. You can turn it into a desert by making a pudding or a sweet potato pie.
I like to eat sweet potatoes smashed up with butter, salt and pepper. Not sweet. But you can add maple syrup or brown sugar to sweeten it up.
I've both boiled and baked them and found very little difference in texture or flavor. If you boil them use only a small amount of water so that the potato doesn't soak up extra water. I also peel them after they're cooked because the peeling slides right off.
*Boil some honey, cinnamon, and orange juice. Mix in with mashed sweet potato.
*layer it with whipped cream and plenty of sugar in a parfait dish. Top with chocolate chips.
*make some cookies with it; use a pumpkin cookie recipe and replace some of the canned pumpkin with the sweet potato.
Hope that helps! Make sure you add plenty of sweetener if it's dessert.
You could cut it up in slices and put it in the fridge and than serve with dinner with a syrup. butter, honey, and cinnamon, brown sugar. mix all these ingredients and pour on to serve with sweet potatos.:) I love them!!:) Oh and add raisins!:-)
cut it up in cubes, and put it in a salad.
That is what we do here.
Put it in any ol' salad... toss with dressing.
Good.
People who hate sweet potatoes love mine. I peel, cut and boil when done I had butter and brown sugar, and whip them with my hand mixer. YUMMY. I love them best with turkey ( I buy thighs legs and breasts cook in slo cooker) and make gravy. Pour the gravy over them. Chichen is also good with them.
It's like a modified Thanksgiving dinner.
I have a friend who is a Doctor of Holstic Medicine she says to never cook in the microwave. The microwave destroys all the vitimins in your food.
Baked sweet potatoes are good with brown sugar and butter. Boiled? Not sure. You can mash it & top it with brown sugar & butter.
slice up, pour some honey brown sugar and butter on um and put um in the oven long enough to melt the butter , honey and sugar.
or serve as mashed sweet potatoes with cinnamon, brown sugar and butter.
Boiled potatoes make mashed potatoes so maybe its about the same. mash it up and add butter and a touch of milk, salt and pepper to taste. I bake mine in an all cotton bag in the microwave and they are wonderful! I usually do butter and s&p, but at a restaurant the other day they had cinnamon and pecans on the yam/sweet potato and it was really delicious! Gonna try that next time at home. Its nearly a dessert.
Definitely a bit of brown sugar, butter and a pinch of cinnamon. Great with chicken! You could make sweet potato fritters, the same way you would make pumpkin fritters.
yummy!
To compliment your sweet potato you can add this to your chicken dinner. Its a traditional South African Recipe. (Dont add your sweet potato with this, its a seperate side alltogether - LOL)
Ingredients:
1 x can of french cut green beans
1 x cooked (normal, white) potato cut into squares (microwave or boiled)
1/2 an onion, chopped into squares
pinch of garlic,
pinch of sea salt and white pepper
Preparation:
1.Boil cut beans and onion together until cooked
2.Drain water out
3.Add potato, stir roughly with a fork, don't mash the potato just blend it roughly into the mix
4.season with salt, pepper and garlic (optional) and serve.
enjoy!
Not that I have any ideas for salvaging your boiled sweet potato, but I would suggest baking it next time. It is the only way I'll eat mine. I mix in a bit of butter (or none) and add a bit of cinnaminn and nutmeg or some all-spice or a pre-mixed cinnaminn and sugar combo that I use on my toast. At this point, I'd use it in a recipe as suggested.
Good luck.

My step-mom put marshmallow creme (marshmallow fluff that comes in a jar) on mashed sweet potatoes and then baked it. I don't care for it, but someone must have. =) For the future, I usually peel, slice like french fries, toss with olive oil, salt, and pepper and bake uncovered in the oven at 400 for 20-25 minutes, flipping them after about 15 minutes. They aren't what I'd consider dessert sweet, but are a super tasty sweeter vegetable (my almost 5-year-old loves them too). Good luck.
I make sweet potato mash (just like you would regular mashed potatoes) all the time and my family loves them. They are healthier also.
Boil your sweet potatoes (I recommend pealing). drain. Add salt, pepper, butter and milk. Mash and serve. Yum yum.
First of all a baked sweet potatoe retains it's flavor better than a boiled one. We actually sliced them open like a Russet and butter and salt it. A little salt brings out the flavor... A baked one will also bring the sweetness out as well.
There are dozens and dozens of different kinds of yams and sweet potatoes. Some are better than others and some are sweeter. The cool thing about them is they are actually good for your blood sugar and great for diabetics. My favorite is an organic red garnet.
The ladies are right. Cut up the one you have, butter it and add sugar. :)
I've always found to nuke them is much better. Wash them then fork holes in them all over, wrap in a paper towel and nuke about 3 minutes per side then flip. They will be super soft to the touch. Let rest about 4 or 5 minutes, slice in half and spoon out the meat and add cinnamon, brown sugar and/or butter mix well to a mashed potato thickness and enjoy! Make a big batch it's a great left over to reheat...i swear it's even better the next day.
Enjoy.
Add either crushed pineapple or apple sauce to it with cinnimon and butter.
sweet potatoe pie if you want it for dessert or if you want to serve with a meal, after you boil it drain then mash it add brown sugar and juice(I use pineapple juice) mix together put in cassorole dish pit marshmellows on top put in oven at 350 until marshmellows are golden brown-take out and serve
