I don't buy a gift if I can't go to the party. It's not expected at all, so don't feel guilty about it.
If your child is invited to a party but cannot attend, do you still need to buy a gift? The party is for a child from my son's third grade class that he plays with frequently at recess, but not one of his two "best" friends.

I posted this same question not too long ago. I got several responses and the majority of the answers were that a gift was not expected.
no gift, But PLEASE please RSVP and tell them you can't make it :)
No--I don't feel obligated to send a gift. (Unless it a particularly close bud.)
Just make sure to rsvp well before the party!
Uh, no. Just let them know that he won't be able to attend.
No - you don't need to.
No. Unless they are best buddies, I would not purchase a gift.
Your son is not obligated to buy a gift if he cannot attend the party. If he'd like to do it anyhow, that's another matter.
Nope. Only if he is one of your child's best best friends!
You don't need to.
But RSVP.
No need to buy a gift.
Only if the child is a very close friend.
I would. Especially if it's who your child considers his best friend.
If you see them a lot, yes....
If you don't see them a lot, no...
:)
If they're friends I think your son would want to get him something anyway. It does not have to be expensive by any means though. It could be a $10 gift card to Walmart or some other kind of store. It could even be a big package of several colors of Play-Doh with some tools for playing with it, like a small package with a roller, a plastic knife, some shapes, etc...something fun and interesting.
He doesn't HAVE to give a gift if he attends the party, but it is nice. If he's not attending he does not have to give a gift. It would be up to you if you buy a gift for the friend, if they're really good friends it would be nice to still give a gift. If not, don't worry about it!
The gift isn't the point of the party. Celebrating the birthday is.

No, you don't have to buy a gift if he doesn't go to the party. I might buy one anyway if it was his best friend, but even then it wouldn't be necessary.
We do not buy a gift for a party we don't attend unless it is a very close friend or family member. I don't think it is expected.
