Birth Control and Migraines

I had the same problem for years. I now take Micronor. It is all progesterone. It is 97% effective rather than the 99%. You also have some break through bleeding although I do not have the problem with the brand name, just the generic. But, the brand name is expensive. I figured it was no more than refilling the migraine subscription every month and atleast I was not getting as many. I still get them, but no it's not from the pill.

I too suffer from migraines and it was becoming unbearable and I have 3 kids to take care of. Mine are triggered by hormones as well and so she put me on the new BC pill called YAZ-it has worked wonders for me. I have gone from having 3-4 a month to maybe 1 a month. I wish you the best, I know how hard it is.

I like most of the ladies who has responded to you, have hormonal migraines. My doctor put me on Yasmin. First she started me with taking it continously for three months then have a period. The next year I took it continously for four months then had a period. The next year I took it continously for six months then had a period. I am now taking it continously for a entire year so that I don't have a period and the headaches. I did have some minor break through bleeding but it finally stopped. I still have few migraines a year that my Imitrex takes care of, but I feel so much better not having a period and suffering.

I had horrible migraines, sometimes 5-6 times a week. I could write a book about all the things my neurologist and I tried, but eventually what worked was Topamax. I take it twice a day, every day. I still have migraines sometimes, but at least I can live my life now. My migraines were hormonal for years (which yours seem to be), then they changed, now they seem like they may be hormonal again, though we're not sure. Anyway, Topamax works for me. As for birth control, I had a tubal ligation because of pregnancy and delivery complications after my second child, so I don't have any advice about the Mirena IUD (though I did have a copper IUD for a couple of years and liked it). Good luck! I know how awful migraines are.

topamax and some dietary changes are what finally worked for my migraines, after years of trying things. i went from having 3 day migraines with 1 day off to currently almost a week off with 1 day migraines. my quality of life is much much better! yes i do feel somewhat dopey and forget words/things sometimes. but the tradeoff is so worth it. oddly enough, hormones always made my migraines worse. i've been much better minus the hormones (had tubes tied 4 years ago). best of luck and keep trying! there is hope!
