I'm looking for a travel coffee mug for my husband for Christmas. We've gone through several and have yet to find the perfect design. He currently has a Thermus mug with a pop top button that is hard to tell if the lid is in the open or closed function.

My husband has a stainless steel autoseal Contigo with a push button drink top. It is awesome and does not spill. It tumbles all over his Tahoe and never leaks. I think it was about $24 on Amazon.
This is a subject near and dear to my heart. We are very particular about our travel cups. Mine is a ceramic one with a push down melamine top (from Starbucks). They don't sell it anymore, but they have a "new" version of it. If you go in the stores, look at their mugs. It is the cream/white ceramic one that is rather skinny/tall and has a black lid. I love it. It isn't at all like drinking from a metal cup.
Husband likes the double insulated aluminum ones. And I got him 2 from Starbucks last year that he likes. The cap is screw on with a flip up drink spout cover. No mistaking if it is open or closed whatsoever. And if you temper it with hot water first, it will keep a cup of coffee (18 oz) hot for HOURS. He has almost an hour commute and pours his coffee well before he leaves the house. Otherwise, he runs the risk of it being too hot to drink it while he's driving.
It is also a taller skinnier design so it fits perfectly in any cupholder. NO handles. Love that concept. Handles just get in the way.

This is my husband's only it didn't come in matte black when I bought his. But I guess I had the oz wrong. It holds enough, though. 16 oz.
And it's kinda funny, b/c his was a Christmas gift, too. LOL

Sorry to edit again, but I wanted to add that one of the reasons we love this one, is the rubberized grip strip that runs around it. They have another very similar tumbler that holds 20 oz, but it doesn't have that strip. It comes in handy if the metal outside is too warm, or your hands are wet or you are wearing slippery gloves. And most travel cups that I have seen that are metal do not have anything like it. If they have anything "grippy" it is a handle, and they never fit my cup-holders properly.
Nissan stainless. Keeps coffee hot for hours. I love mine.
The best ones I have out of all the ones we own:
a stainless steel mug w/a handle, skinny bottom so it fits in the car cup
holder & has a flat lid on top.
You can find these most anywhere but I've had the best luck at Walreens
and Walmart, if you have these stores in your area.

My husband takes coffee to work with him every day so I have spend a lot of money finding "the perfect travel mug".
Guess what - no such thing. I have spent way too much money trying out all different kinds and the ones he ends up liking best are the cheap ($1 a pop) plastic starbuck cups. They look like their paper cups.
Yes, they don't keep your coffee hot like an insulated mug, but honestly by the time he gets to work my DH is done with his coffee anyways. But as a latte drinker I appreciate that you can pop them in the microwave to heat up the milk before you add the coffee.
At $1 I would suggest you give it a try. I was positively surprised.
I like the ones I have from Starbucks.
And they DO have some there that are made in the USA!

Costco, at least where I live, has been selling a two-pack of them for $15-$20 depending on the week and what coupons are valid.
It keeps coffee hot for hours, longer if you "prime" it first, and doesn't spill. Ever.
