Hi K.,
Wonderful questions, and yes you should be thinking about both Dr & place of birth. I teach HypnoBirthing childbirth education and a part of my class takes time to see the importance of this. Yes, Troy is a big institution, and yes you can get lost in it, and yes it can have provide a more 'Active management of labor style' if you let that be. The main thing for you is to get the best Dr. who will uphold your wishes. I have heard of not so great births at Troy B. However, having said that, I have had Moms who have taken my class have great births there......the difference?? I believe is that the Moms who got their desired births their used their VOICE. They educated themselves before giving birth, knew what they wanted and knew how to work with the hosp. staff etc. You can absolutely have the birth you desire with education and preparation before. Hiring a doula can also support the birth process for you. But not everyone who takes my class has a doula. Moms and birthing companions (usually Dad) empower themselves and boost their confidence about birthing. If you haven't chosen a childbirth education course yet (and I mean one other than the 1 hour course at the hosp.) visit my website www.YourPeacefulBirthing.com and see if it appeals to you. Also, I am listed on the Local Business Mama pedia page, Peaceful Birthing.
Also, you may want to interview Dr. Jonathan Cayle, he delivers out of Troy B. and he is a good cross of a strong medical background and letting Moms bodies do what they are supposed to do, provided their is no high risk or special medical circumstance of course. Also, Dr. Daniel Greene out of Crittenton is also a very supportive provider and he loves HypnoBirthing.
Good Luck!! Congrats on your pregnancy,
J.
