Bathroom Issue When Pregnant

Hi Moms,

Okay, I know this may seem odd but here goes...I am 16 weeks pregnant and I've noticed for several weeks that when I have the urge to go to the bathroom, only a trickle of urine comes out...it's just not a strong flow. All my labs came back normal at my 13 week appt, I don't have pain when I urinate, so I don't think it's a UTI. I'm wondering if my growing uterus is putting pressure on my bladder and so I'm feeling every subtle urge to urinate, even though only a little comes out?? Is this possible? Sorry, I know it's kind of a weird issue!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

That's exactly what it is. When you get a little further along your uterus will move out of your pelvis and into your abdomen and you will have some relief. Be sure to bring it up with your midwife or doctor at you next appointment though in case they want to check things out. Congrats.

You may have a backwards leaning uterus which would cause you to have to go to the bathroom more frequently. It can also cause you to not be able to empty your bladder fully. It doesn't cause any problems with the pregnancy other than making you have to pee more often. Basically because the uterus leans backwards it rests on the bladder and you feel the urge to go more. Congrats on your pregnancy and I hope you have a happy and healthy pregnancy and baby!

Oh yes, so normal. You feel like you might as well move into the bathroom as often as you feel like you have to go. You can have your doc rule out a UTI just to be sure but it doesn't really matter how far along you are, sometimes any tiny pressure makes you feel full.

If it doesn't resolve itself by your next ob/gyn appt which should be coming up soon, definitely mention it. I ended up having a UTI and didn't even know it. If you're still in the clear, chances are it is the position of your uterus on your bladder, which will probably resolve itself further into the 2nd trimester...again, if you're concerned, mention it to your ob/gyn.

And like someone else mentioned, it will happen again toward the end of the 3rd trimester when you feel like the size of a house. :)

My kids are almost 2 and 4, but from what I remember that was totally normal for me the first and last trimesters - look forward to trimester 2 - it's awesome!!! All the icky stuff is gone and you feel sooooooooooo good!

Congrats!

Hi R.,

I have the same thing. Be sure to lean forward while you are going, it will help empty it further. Sometimes it gets better in the 2nd trimester and then of course bad again in the 3rd. Congrats on the 1st pregnancy!

I had this during my last pregnancy, though a bit later (around 25-30 weeks). Then I got religious about kegeling and it went away. There's a lot of stress on the muscles down there during pregnancy, and 16 weeks is only the beginning. Definitely ask next doctor visit, but also start being diligent about doing kegels. It really only takes a good 20-40/day to make a difference. The trick is to not use ANY other muscle groups (like abdominals or your butt) when you're doing them.
