I second the over the counter Lotrimin (Clotrimazole) that you can find at any drugstore or Target. Worked for us all 3 times this has happened to my son and was recommended by his pediatrician and my daycare provider.
I have a 10 month old boy who has had diaper rash/yeast infection for almost 3 weeks straight now. I was told to try and find "gentian violet" and herbal remedy, but haven't been able to locate it at the usual places (Whole foods, The Wedge). Anyone have a suggestion on where i might find gentian violet, or other suggestions on how ease/heal the yeast infection?

Both of my children had the same thing. Our pediatritian said it was from the antibiotics, that they wipe out all of the bad and good bacteria. She had said to look for acidopholus at the health food store. It is a powder that I added to my daughter's orange juice in the morning and restores the good bacteria. For both of the kids I also used monistat like a diaper cream instead of the regular diaper creams and it worked great.
I got gentian violet from my pediatrician when my son and I both had thrush. I would think it would be super messy for the diaper area though, it stains everything bright purple!
My son gets yeast infection diaper rashes after being on antibiotics, and I give him a probiotic or acidophillous. You can get it at Whole Foods, or the best luck I've had is with a brand called Culturelle, which is available at Target, you just have to ask the pharmacist!
Sounds like you may need to go to a CVS or similar place and ask for an anti-fungal cream. The pharmacist will be able to advise you on that.
Those yeast diaper rashes can be tough to get rid of. The most important thing to do is keep his bottom as dry as possible--frequent diaper changes and "airing out" in between. Can you put him on a waterproof pad and let him go diaperless for awhile? With my son my pediatrician also recommended that after the bath I put the hair dryer on the air only/no heat setting and blow a little air on his bottom to get it completely dry. When I used Gentian violet years ago for thrush my pediatric nurse practitioner was able to get it for me. Have you tried a supplement store like GNC? Is it o.k. to use it in the diaper area? Finally, your pediatrician can get you an anti-fungal prescription cream that will work if you want to go that route.
"Present Moment" is located at 35th and Grand and carries herbs, tinctures, books, and knowledgeable practitioners of "alternative" healing methods. I'm sure they have the herbs you are looking for, and maybe even advice on ways to heal the rash. Also, have you made sure to keep sugar and yeasty foods out of his diet (including fruit sugars)? I know folks who just let their child run free without a diaper while the rash heals, (the trapped moisture perpetuates the rash) but this isn't always an easy option for obvious reasons...
Good luck!
Unfortunately for me, when my oldest gets a diaper rash it tunrs into a yeast rash quite frequently. We use the generic anti fungal cream from Target with great results. Per our pediatrician, we put on a very thin layer of the anti fungal cream, allow it to dry a little, then put on the Butt Paste (that just happens to be the diaper rash cream that we use, you can use any of them) because the anti fungal cream will get rid of the yeast but it doesn't act as a wetness barrier. The diaper rash and yeast rash are usually gone in a day doing this.
I didn't find "gentian violet" but I found Gentian root and Gentian root powder from Ameriherb (Phone: 1-800-267-6141) out of Ames, IA. If you call, do it early, like 8 AM because they do get busy. The smallest unit is a pound, and it's $13.50 for a lb. of the root and $9.70 for a lb. of the powder. I don't know if that's what you were looking for, but if not, call this place anyway and ask for a catalog. They have almost every herb under the sun and it's quite reasonable.
Have you tried TAO Natural Foods, on Hennepin and 22nd? They may have it.
Also, I used Lotrimin (spell?), a foot fungus cream, for my daughters diaper rash/yeast infections, and it works.
I haven't yet been to a meeting of this group, but you may be interested as well: holisticmoms.org. They have groups in the Twin Cities.

My boys both had yeast infections last summer. My pediatrician recommended using the regular yeast infection cream that you would use. It worked really well. It's not a "natural" way to take care of it, but it worked with in 2 or 3 days which helped them both.
Good luck,
J.
Have you considered taking your son to see your doctor?
Hi J..
My son had a yeast infection and a bad diaper rash on his bottom too. I used over the counter Lotrimin around and under his "pee pee" and Weleda Diaper Rash Cream every where else. I call it "the miracle cream" and have given every new Mom I know a Weleda Starter Kit ever since. The body lotion or cream also works great on eczema - which my little guy has had since he was born. If you're using a diaper with Chlorine or a Gel for absorption in it I'd recommend changing to one that's free of chemicals. We use Seventh Generation and love them. You have to change them more often and double them at night though since they don't have the absorption but it's much better for their little bottoms and they can feel when they're wet which helps for potty training in the future. Using wipes that are hypoallergenic/alcohol free helps a lot too. We use Tushies Wipes and they've worked great. So, I guess my advice is Lotrimin, Weleda Diaper Rash Cream, Seventh Generation Diapers and Tushies Wipes and I'd bet that rash will be gone in a day or two. :) I now order these items online but I know that Whole Foods and Lakewinds have them. Hope this helps.
Hi J.!
There's a place called PRESENT MOMENT. They have a lot of unique tinctures and herbs that others just don't carry.
Also, I have used Boudreaux's BUTT PASTE and it works wonders on our kids (you can find it just about anywhere in the baby aisle).
When our kids went through this, our Ped suggested frequent baths, blow dry on COOL with the hair dryer and try to keep the diaper off as much as possible (perhaps a bit challenging with your little one!).
Hope this helps!
Good luck.
Blessings,
G. H
Have you checked with Walgreens or CVS Pharmacies? Also there is Natural Valley Foods in Burnsville, MN. Also I use a mixture of 3/6/9 salad oil & cell ver from Eniva for my kids. It works very well. I hope this will help you.
