Baby's First Sippy Cup

My son is 9 1/2 months. I tried introducing him to a sippy cup. He loves to hold it and play with it. But when he puts it in his mouth, he bites on the spout instead of sucking from it. He doesn't get that the can drink from it. Is he too young to start teaching him to drink from the sippy cup? If not, what am I doing wrong?

What can I do next?

I started my baby on her's at 5 months, and she did the same thing. I bought the soft spouted cups at first, and then, around 10 months old, I swithed her to hard spout. Just keep introducing it to him, he'll get it eventually. I buy the gerber sip and smile cups. They're great for transitioning from one stage to the next!

Sounds about right! I started both of mine about this age, and they didn't really catch on until they were around 11 months. With the no-spill valves on those things you have to suck pretty hard to get anything out (I tried it -- it's hard!). Maybe take the valve out and just put a tiny bit of liquid in there. They did master the no-spill cups, but we eventually went to the old-fashioned Tupperware kind of cups. Easier to drink out of and fewer parts to clean or keep up with :-). I think The First Years makes some that come in a six-pack of different colored cups with lids. We still use the little cups. Sometimes we still use the lids if we ever have a "picnic" in the living room floor, or let the kids bring drinks into the living room for a movie, etc.

It took my son a while to get used to drinking from a sippy cup. I also had to go through several kinds before he would actually drink out of them. It will come in time, just be patient! Happy New Year!

You are def starting at the right age I think! My son has been using one since that age. I tried all different kinds and he did the same thing. He would just bite the spout. Maybe you should try giving him his sippy cup when it bottle time and he will maybe catch on? Trust me it takes a lil bit for them to realize "hey I can drink from this" but I don't think you are doing anything wrong at all!!! Good luck everyday is a new challenge or adventure!!!
