Baby Orajel Question

Before reading this, I want you to know that it is okay to totally sit at your computer, read this and laugh. This is, by far, the dumbest question I have had in my short stint as being a mother.

So...who has some tips on actually getting the orajel onto the gums? I've tried twice and failed miserably! Most of it winds up on his tongue and he makes the strangest faces, but seems to like the taste of it. Further exacerbating the problem is the fact that I get really squeamish touching my baby's gums (think nails on a chalkboard or biting down on a fork). Yeah, yeah I know I gotta just get the heck over how it feels...but first I have to actually get to the gums!

I know this won't scar him for life nor will it make his gums and teeth fall out of his mouth if I can't get it on the gums, but seriously...there has to be an easier way. If you can't tell already I have a decent sense of humor about this and am definitely not losing sleep over this, but if you have a tip I'd love to hear it (and, as my baby teethes I bet he'd be appreciative too!).

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Now, why I didn't think to use a Q-tip in the first place is beyond me! Easier aim, less mess, and I don't have to touch the gums. Thanks for all the help.

I tried to put orajel on my sons gums too and he did not like it. I tried it on my gums and it accidentally got on my lips and it was the wierdest feeling-- all numb- it was then I realized why he did not like it. We threw it away and traded it in for a nice cold stalk of celery to help with the teething pain.
good luck

NOt sure if you mean the orajel for teething pain or the toothpaste. We use the finger applicators for the toothpaste but will soon use the toothbrushes from dental office as my son is biting down now and it kinda hurts. For teething, I had a hard time with the gel and I didn't want to make their whole mouth numb. So we used the teething tablets (can find them on drugstore.com) and those seemed to help... and when that wouldn't work... baby tylenol. Good luck :)

I get the creeps even looking at my kids teeth and don't even think about showing me a loose tooth. So I know where you are coming from.
I actually was told years ago to not use any of the teething jels more of it whinds up down their throat then on the gums and if you use to much it can numb the throat and they can choke if it is numb when they eat. When I did try it I had the same experience and it didn't seem to help at all.
So I would just give them tylenol that seemed to take the edge off. Or a wet washcloth frozen for them to chew on.

A Q-tip works great. Easy to aim too.

Good luck,

Try Hyland's teething tablets. They work wonders and you won't have to touch your baby's gums! They can be found atDominicks in the baby aisle or in the oral care aisle. Walgreen's and Costco (behind the counter at the pharmacy)have them too. My son got his teeth in two and four at a time. After a while, he would get excited and smile when I shook the bottle of tablets because he knew relief was on its way.

Hello MR, Try using a q-tip just put some orajel on and rub it on the babies gums that's what I did for my son. Or you can buy a gum messager. It's made like a thimble it slides right over your finger and it's made of rubber baby's love it.

I tried those pre-loaded q-tip baby Oragel things. I definately got it on DD's gums, but on the way out she sucked on it. I think her whole mouth must have gone numb because she was drooling like crazy for a while afterwards.
I tried a few more times with the same results. I gave up and just went back to giving her her mesh bag feeder thing filled with crushed ice. It seems to work as well, and actually keeps her busy for a good 10 minutes (which is always a bonus).
Her shirt gets soaked from the mesh bag, but it got pretty soaked with drool when I did the Oragel so...
I don't really have any advice, sorry :)

How about applying it with a Q-tip? I've also heard that Highlands tablets are great for teething.

I gave up on the orajel after the first time we put it on my daughter's gums and she drooled for literally 3 hours. She was never a spitter or a drooler, but htat stuff just made her so numb, and yet she was still cranky. Ice teethign rings worked well for her.
