I am only 31, not overweight, and have been diagnosed as having chondromalacia patellae, or having soft cartilage, a mostly genetic condition. I'm about to start physical therapy. I can no longer run or jog and I'm in a lot of pain all the time. Anyone ever diagnosed with this or something similar? What kinds of excercises do u do?

What can I do next?

As a personal trainer, I have worked with many clients with knee problems. The first thing you need to do is really work on strenghth and stability. The stronger your quads, hamstrings, and especially your glutes are the more stability you are going to have in your knees. It is very important you are working with a good physical therapist, because that is what makes the difference. I would definitely give up any running or jogging and stick with either walking, biking, or an ellyptical machine. But the strength and stability training is what will make the most difference. The exercise really does make a difference and I have seen people avoid surgery, but you need to do the work. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me ____@____.com or you can call me at ###-###-#### ext.222. Good luck!

I had that when I was in high school. I ended up having 2 cortizone shots, one in each knee, and they did the trick. I was also in physical therapy for a few months but my knees are fine now 20 years later! The exercises they gave me in physical therapy didn't hurt at all and they just strengthened the muscles around the knee.

I recommend you look into a pair of z-coil shoes... google search to read aboutthem and locate where to get them.

Oooh I feel for you. I had the same thing. SOOO painful. I was in therapy for quite awhile (it did nothing) So I opted for surgery. I am so happy I did it. It was really a cinch. Not a lot of pain. I did my left knee first. It healed very quickly, 2 weeks later I did the right. I did have some problems with bruising with the right one though. But I would do it again in a heartbeat. Let me know if you have any other questions. Good luck C.
