M., I am an attorney but I do not practice family law. I'm writing because I recently got married to a man who had a *horrible* divorce decree. His ex-wife and the lawyer she chose to handle it walked all over him and his rights. (That lawyer was actually disbarred!)
Unfortunately, trying to straighten the decree out after it had already been signed was VERY difficult and VERY costly. Sad to say, an awesome family law attorney is not usually cheap, and an affordable family law attorney may not represent you to the fullest.
Anyway, I would be happy to answer any specific questions that you have to the best of my knowledge about what is standard in Texas. But I really just wanted to strongly encourage you to do whatever you can to beg or borrow the money you might need to see a GOOD attorney because what is expensive now could cost you a LOT more later down the road. A lot of people make the mistake of trying to save money on the front end of a divorce, but it comes back to bite them in the end.
We used Tom Noble for our matters. He's good, but he's not cheap. We're in debt up to our eyeballs over this, but it was worth to preserve our rights and get the decree straightened out. Like I said before, please feel free to let me know if you have specific questions.
Best of luck, this stuff is never easy. The nature of divorce law in Texas is that it pretty much feels like you're always getting stepped on, even with the standard agreements :( The only comfort you have is just knowing that others are going through this, too.
