At What Age Do You Stop Using Months?

I just think at some point you need to refer to a child as a 2 year old or a 3 year old or a 7 year old instead of an 84 month old :).

What can I do next?

I stopped around 2. Actually I stopped a few months before my kids were each 2. I thought it sounded silly to say "Oh, she/he is 20 months old." So I would say "She/he will be 2 in a few months." I have heard people say that their child was "37 months old" and thought it sounded really odd. Then I want to be a brat and reply with "Really? I am 347 months old!"

2 is when I stopped. People would have me committed if I said my daughter was 288 months old and that the baby boy was 240 months. =) Giggle snort!

I stopped referring to DD in months at 2 years, I think. Her clothes may have been 24 months (and I've occasionally seen 36 months) but it just made more sense after that to say 2.5 yrs vs 29 months or something. DD is 4 and I think if I tried to refer to her in months (her cousin is 16 months old), she'd yell that I was calling her a baby. :)

I'd say right around 2yrs old. I once had a woman tell me her child was 47 months old. Seriously, you expect me to do the math? Just tell me your kid is "almost 4" or "will be 4 next month". 47 months? Really?

I stopped at 2 years old. At 18 months I started saying 1 1/2 years old, but then I couldn't stop the habit (19 months, 20 months) until she was 2. Yea, I think it's a little weird to say, "he/she is 26 months old," etc. :)

I agree, at age 2. Unless there is a specific reason as to why those 'extra' months are more specific. Then you move to 2 and a half.

I always quit at around 2, then it became "just turned two" or "almost 2 1/2" or "almost 3", etc... I think it sounds beyond ridiculous to refer to your child as 35 months...

If someone was asking me a development question, I sometimes refer to months. For example, I was speaking with another mom about speech. Like, when my son was over 2, but not much. A 28 month old, is different then a 3 year old...in development terms. In general discussion, I think it's normal to stop at 2.

I went by clothing sizes. They were size 18 months then they became size 2, size 3 etc. I may have said almost 2, or 2 and a half, or he'll be 3 in July. The only time I would use months is if we were at the doctor or somewhere where they might need to know the accurate age.

I think I quit at 18 months. It just made more sense to me to say a year and a half. After that, I'd pretty much just say they'd be two in October or June, respectively. (I had two kids).

My daughter was really tiny so even though I didn't refer to her in months, many of her clothes were still sized that way.

I've noticed some moms drag the month thing out. I'm not sure why. Maybe they are sentimental and it's hard to refer to their kids in years.
It's not that I can't do the math, but I'd prefer not to.

Just my opinion.

After my kid hit twelve months I said she was a year old. When she was a year and one month, I said she's a year and one month. When she was a year and six months I said, she's one and a half. When she was one and seven months I still said she was one and a half. Then a few months later she turned two and it all became a non issue.

When you say your kid is a year, people know there are 12 months in it so you can use that when determining your child's "year age". ;)

Lol I think after 2 there's no longer a need for months. I just saw a post that said 36 month old or something like that. REALLY? You can always use a 1/2 to distinguish age if necessary.

On the dot of 2. But that was in part because my son could say "2" (pron. "do") but he couldn't say "27 months." As soon as he turned 2, I started doing this routine, "Oh no, I forgot! How old are you?" And he'd answer.

I think I stopped at about 2.. Once in awhile, I will make an exception if I am talking about a milestone.. But I have a 15 month old, 3 yr old, almost 5 yr old.. I think we would (despite knowing math) get a little confused about how old is a 72 month for example.

Around 18 months, just say, "a year and a half".. or "almost two"...the academic time frame is typically 32 months for milestone tracking.

lol. that is funny when you think about it. How old is your daughter? Oh she is 60 months. That sounds riduculous! I agree with the others. I have heard most ppl go up until the age of 2. When my son was 2 1/2 i never said he was 30 months, i said he was 2 1/2.

I cut mine off at their second birthday. After 23 months, I call them by their years. I call my 27 month old two. Some times I say, she just turned two.

I remember stopping at around 16 months with my first. I think that's when it started becoming unwieldy trying to calculate. With my second, I just tell people, "She'll be/She was X in April" and let them figure out the months for themselves.

Before 1 year old, weeks & months are the only ways to measure age. After a year, we stopped using months. If she was 1 year & 2 months, I would say "she turned 1 in April" & so on.

I always used months until 24 months...not sure how I'll handle it when mine turns 2 years. I think that if I ever needed to make a developmental point, though, I would be okay with being more specific (as in the recent 39mo post here). I don't like adding "half" because people don't seem to use it accurately. Whatever makes the speaker comfortable. I get a little annoyed when I ask the baby's age and the mother tells me "1" or "a year". That tells me nothing except that I can narrow down the baby's age to about 11 months to about 23 months, so I typically have to just forget that I ever saw that baby, so that I can do away with the wondering.

I think that it's crazy that it bothers so many people. I think that I'll use months forever, just because.

Well, not being a math nerd like Teresa, I stopped at one. to clarify I could say "just turned one in April, then 1 and a half and then almost 2. Since my oldest two are math nerds I'll have them calculate it out and then start telling people.... that will be fun :)
