Are You Interested in a "Green Moms, Healthy Kids" Play Date?

Hi Moms! Throughout my time of being a part of mamasource, I have come to see that there are quite a few green moms out there. I was thinking about putting together a one time play date, to perhaps meet like minded moms, and to give our kids a chance to make new friends. I am too busy to make this a regular thing, but I thought it would be fun to try. I am thinking something informal, for about an hour (maybe 3-4) at one of the parks out here in Wellington. So, what is the criteria???? There is none. What makes me green? Well, I care about the environment, recycle, use cloth diapers on my daughter, love and care for our animal friends, when my daughter was younger I made all her baby food, I love health food, we are vegetarian, etc. I also do not vaccinate...that is not really "green", but tends to occur more in natural parenting. I am not looking to get together a group of moms "just like me". I am looking to plan a play date for moms that might share some of my same views. Even if you do not share any of my views, but are open-minded and non-judgmental, than please come!!!! I have a lot going on in the next few weeks..so really this might be a June thing..I just want some feedback, if you would be interested, then I will contact you closer to the time. Okay, thanks!

So What Happened?

Hi Moms...and Dads! I am so happy that so many of you are interested in a play date! Please keep responding. In a few responses I had questions of my choice to not vaccinate. I would like to take this space to elaborate. When my daughter was born, I did vaccinate, but I always felt like it was so wrong. Injecting these very healthy kids with poisons and toxins. I still felt like, who was I, a stay at home mom, to question these doctors. My friend had a child a few months after I did. She chose to not vaccinate at all, and suggested that I just take the time that I would researching a new car that I would vaccines. I had just bought a car, so I could not say no to that challenge. Once I started researching, I couldn't stop. What got me first were the terrible stories I read about children dying shortly after their vaccines. The occurance of SIDS is most common right at 2 and 4 months..coincidentally, right around the time of their dr appts. I read case after case of parents convinced that their child's death was due to vaccines, only to have the coroner call it SIDS. Okay, so as we all know, it is easy to find sad stories on any subject if you have internet access..that can't be the only reason to make a decision like this. I got on some websites like www.educatebeforeyouvaccinate and read articles from Dr. Mercola. Did you know that Japan had the highest infant mortality rate..and by simply just not vaccinating until their children are 2, they jumped down to #17. the best advice I can give is to go to the website for the center of disease control. www.cdc.gov This is a non-partial site where you can get statistics on each of the diseases your child is vaccinated against. Lets look at polio. It does not even exist in our country anymore. Yes, I absolutely understand that our country did face a terrible epidemic. If we were to face another, then I would have to do further research to determine if I would vaccinate...but I don't see the reason to vaccinate against something that is not a threat. How about the hepatitis our kids are shot up against. Well, they can only get that through sex or shared needles. My baby isn't going to see either of those scenarios anytime soon. We moved out to Wellington last year..and I had to interview pediatricians. It is true that many will not see your unvaccinated child. I truly believe this is all for financial reasons. Drug companies reward those that push their products. It all revolves around the dollar. In my interviews with local pediatricians, I met one who would see Star, but said he would try to convince me to vaccinate. I asked him what he would really push..and he said chicken pox. I asked how many kids die each year of chicken pox..and he told me it has the highest death rate of all vaccinated diseases..140 kids a year. That is one heck of a low number. Let's look at autism. There is much debate over the relationship between vaccines and autism. Although it has long been thought by many parents that there is a connection, the medical field has said no, no, no. Now the CDC has actually revised their stance stating that they are doing more research into the possibility. All we can look at is the rate of 1 in 150 kids are now considered autistic...with a staggering 1 in 90 boys!!!!!!!!!!! Come on! There is no such thing as a genetic epidemic. Something is causing this. The government has a fund set up for victims of vaccines. Let me assure you, this is not for the kids that just have fevers. This is for the children who have been permanently injured from vaccines, or have died. You can read this right on the literature that your pediatrician gives you when you get your child vaccinated. When I first made the decision to not vaccinate, I did worry whether I was making the right choice..but even more than a year after that decision, I continue to educate myself and I feel 100% complete with my decision. My husband feels the same way. We have met so many parents making the same choices. I truly believe that breastmilk is the best thing you can ever do for your child..that builds up an extremely strong immune system. the next step is to feed your child a healthy diet. Whole foods..fresh produce..no processing...little sweets...fresh and natural. On another note, it is estimated that 30%-60% of all cancers are caused by diet. I respect all parents and their decisions. We love our kids all more than we probably thought was possible, and we all want what is best for them. I did not write this to put anyone down..just to share my view. If you have any questions, feel free to write to me...and please, join our play date! oh, and ps...your kids CAN go to school w/o vaccines. You need to get a waiver from the health dept. Legally no one can question you. We live in a free country..no one can force you to do something to your child that you see unfit!

Hi
I was wondering why you do not vacinate? Does that mean ever? Don't they have to be vaccinated before they can go to school?
I was just wondering your view on it because I have never heard of someone choosing no shots. I have heard of people choosing a different schedule and so forth.
My kids are breastfeeding, and veggie babys too, I was just interested in your thoughts on the vaccations.

I think it's great to be environmentally conscious. Of course, I am conscious of my child's environment enough that I don't really want him hanging around kids who haven't been vaccinated.

Unfortunately, I think today's kids are going to have to start worrying about things like polio and measles that my generation only read about in books.

EDIT: Sorry, this response came across less politely than I intended. Vaccines are a tough issue! I guess I'll respond in the vaccines thread that A. set up so as not to get this one off track. Although, since they were mentioned here, I will say that those conspiracy-theory websites that Reggie linked are clearly not objective. I wouldn't put too much stock in what they have to say.
