Apartment Renting/quite Hours

We have been blessed w/such quite tenants below us. They recently moved and a young couple moved in a toddler. We do not mind their ages or the child at all. However they must have "get togethers" every other day that run till sometimes 12:00 a.m. It is driving me crazy. I like my quite time after my kids are put to sleep which is 8:00 p.m. We are a young couple too w/2 small toddlers and a 7 year old. We can make noise, a lot, through out the day but as soon as 8:00 hits, you could drop a pin in our apt. I mentioned this to the landlord once when they first moved in because they were so loud and I don't know what steps to take next. What are the renting laws in IL and when are "quite hours" considered? I don't want to fued w/my neighbors. But they need to be a little more considerate.

What can I do next?

Have you spoken with your neighbors yet? That really should be the first step. Maybe they don't know they're being so loud or maybe they think that everyone, regardless of age or family size parties til all hours. If they can't be respectful, talk to the landlord next. If the landlord isn't any help, then you may wish to contact the police.

Unfortunately my experience in 'shared living' arrangements (apartments/condos) is that many people don't give a hoot about how their living habits affect others. I wish you the best of luck.

I am right there with you and our landlord won't do anything. Our kids are in bed at 7 and at 10:30 their kids are still up running around and screaming like there is some kind of emergency. Most nights they have there music going until 1am or later, it drives me nuts but it does come with renting an apartment...

Unless they're really disturbing the peace (people in the hallways, loud music) I doubt there is all that much you can do. Realistically, most people don't go silent at 8 p.m.! Your schedule is pretty unusual.

Do you know the neighbors at all? I think a great approach might be to invite them over with their child, have some playdates. Get to know them, let them know you, and then when they know that they are bothering you they will have more invested in trying to keep the noise down, especially after 10 or so.

Apartment living (which I did for many years) really requires that you have a lot of tolerance for putting up with other people's noise (and smoke, and food smells, etc.) It just comes with the territory, especially in newer construction where it seems like you can hear every little sound.

Good luck!
