Apartment Problems...

Hi Moms!

I am having numerous apartment problems! I haven't had more than 6 hours of sleep in the past two weeks due to noisy neighbors. It is now almost 10:30pm at night and I'm still wide awake due to the person below blasting their TV (yet again) the things on my wall are shaking. This happened not too long ago where things actually fell off the wall and broke. I talked to the leasing office about this a few times and even sent a typed out letter to them about this one neighbor. Its all hours of the night too. It was once at 5am. I often have children over here during the day and it sets them off as well. I can't just sleep during the day because I work during the day, even then the tv/music is so loud. I am physically very much drained tonight and I am sick of hearing someone TV all night long or music.

Advice? Shall I call corporate about this problem? Seems the leasing office is doing nothing, yet again.

Thank you.

What can I do next?

Summary of all the other mom's advice:
1. Talk to the neighbor directly
2. Talk to the leasing office, have them come to the apartment to hear what the problem is.
3. If the office doesn't handle it call the corporate office -- often.
4. Then, Call the police -- often
5. Document everything: dates, times, person contacted, etc.

You need to call the police each time. I had this issue once and was told by the leasing office they need the police reports to take care of the issue. The police will not call out the person who called on them to your neighbors.

Call the office. If they don't respond--call the police.
Usually apartments have "quiet" times--typically after 10 p.m. Does yours?

This is what happens when you share walls ceilings and floors with people that are strangers ... you need to work this out with them nicely the leasing office is not going to do anything other than write letters/notes nad they may not actually do that in all honesty.

Sadly, the last time I had this issue, the only thing that worked was me moving. I called and complained to the leasing office. I brought the leasing office into my apartment when the music was going. This guy was just downright determined that he was going to have parties all of the time. When we called the leasing office, they would go to this guy and he would give them sob stories about how sorry he was and that he didn't realize that he was bothering anyone. (DUHHH....parties at 2 a.m., what did you think?) They would listen to him. We ended up breaking our lease at significant cost to us and moving into a house. It was awful.

What is city ordinance, if it is quiet after 10 then call the police. Police need to be involved for things like this, I have learned after renting for 10+years that the leasing company will avoid at all costs doing anything until police are involved.

Sry you are dealing with this I always hated neighbors like these.

Pick up the phone each and every time they have the noise to high. The police are a semi threatening person to have knock on the door. They will most likely rebel a bit and turn it up occasionally but just call them again and they will come out again.

Check your city ordinances for any that pertain to mechanical noises. These are often a 24 hour per day offence. That way if the are doing them during the day you can call.

Hello, I would call the police if this doesn't stop. They can go to the noisy neighbor and tell them to turn their noise down. They can keep it anonymous.
Good luck.

My daughter has difficulties with noisy neighbors. First, her husband goes to their apartment and asks them to quiet down. Often that is enough. But if not they do complain to the office and after enough complaints (I don't know how many) the noisy neighbors are evicted. It just takes time to allow them to quiet down and to document that they don't.

Calling the police could very well help in the documentation process. But I wouldn't call them until you'd tried talking directly with your neighbor. Start out assuming that they don't realize how loud they are. Perhaps invite them to listen from your apartment. Complain to management. And if that doesn't work, call the police.

If you call the police first they'll probably ask you to talk with the neighbors first. Noise complaints are way down on their priority list.

I've had similar problems and yes I immediately called the office (afterhours when it was going on). If this ever failed to stop the noise I called the local police out and they would always assist promptly. I never addressed it personally because I didn't want or need the animosity with neighbors that already were showing that they were not polite. Mine were young adults and the summer was their time PARTY! ugh. Good luck..

Have you gone and knocked on the door of the person that is making the noise and asked them to quiet down? I was an apartment manager for many years. I often asked the residents to handle it first on their own, politely then if it did not work, then I would get involved.
Go to the persons door and ask politely to turn it down. Have them come into your apartment to see how loud it is. Often they do not realize how loud they are being. Then if that doesn't work, have the manager or leasing agent come into your apartment when the noise is being made. Then they can go to the offender and speak to them.
Good Luck!

I was so excited to move into my first apartment at 19, and then so glad when we moved out. I swear the couple above us did nothing but scream at each other. It sounded like he threw a TV one time, and she would scream at the top of her lungs for him to get off of her.

My husband went up a few times. Sometimes he met the guy coming down the stairs and they were nice, but MAN! We called the cops several times as well.

We moved at the end of our lease and they moved to another apartment complex...near another friend of mine and shocker - same deal.

It will get better when you're out of an apartment or twon house. Sharing walls with people does help save on costs, but not on your sanity.

Wear ear plugs so you can get some sleep. Not the solution to the neighbors, but at least you can get some sleep.

So sorry!
