Anyone with Experience with Implanon

I am considering trying Implanon after having bad side effects with Depo Provera this time around. I can not have a IUD due to having 2 c sections or birth control pills due to them causing my BP to increase. My husband and I don't want to do anything permanent yet, but we are pretty sure we are done with having children. Thanks for your help!

What can I do next?

I had Implanon put in my arm in June. I am on a medication that I CAN NOT get pregnant while I am on it so this is the method I chose to keep from getting pregnant. I love it. After the insertion my arm itched really bad for like a month. I ended up being on two rounds of antibiotics to clear it up. I thought I would end up having to have it removed but the second round of antibiotics fixed it and it has been fine ever since. My first two periods after having it inserted were really light and now I don't get periods at all. I love it. It is perfect for me. So glad I did it. A few years ago I had Norplant (the 5 sticks) and I loved it too but it was recalled and I had to get it taken out. I was very happy that they came out with Implanon.
Best of luck deciding. I think you will like it.

I always caution about IUD's because I had a tubal pregnancy while using one many years ago.

I couldn't do BC pills because I became suicidal on them.

Sometimes the old fashioned methods work best until you decide that one of you is ready to take permanent action. We did that for about 5 years until my husband decided he was ready to have a vasectomy.

I was tired of messing with diaphragms and jellies and sponges and foam and all the artificial means that caused itching and varying degrees of discomfort. After the tubal pregnancy and two vaginal births, I figured I'd held up my share of the family planning agreement.

I had never heard of Implanon before you mentioned it, but looked up the patient information on the Implanon site. It said to EXPECT for your periods to become irregular the entire time you have the implant - irregular length and spotting. I am another person who has had Mirena after 2 c-sections - I have had it for almost 5 years and will soon get a second. The benefits I see over Implanon - less invasive and easier to have inserted or removed, once it's inserted properly you shouldn't even know it's there (Implanon you can feel under your skin), and you get a regular lighter period or even no period instead of an irregular one. The Mirena IUD lasts 5 years, but if you get the copper without hormones that actually lasts ten years - I may opt for that this time around since we are pretty sure we are done having kids (though like Mirena it is easily removable and you can quickly get pregnant again). Honestly, I would talk to your doc about an IUD before goignfor the implant with irregular periods.

Hi Kristen,

i was wondering why you can't have an IUD? I have had 2 c-sections, my children are the same ages as yours, and I have an IUD. I have Mirena. It hurt putting it in only because I have never really dilated, but after the initial insertion the pain went away. I would talk to your doctor about that, maybe it is an exception?

Hi there, I got my implanon in July and since then have not had any problems. but let me tell you how the first couple of weeks were. When I got it put in, the initial placing of it didn't hurt but the needle for the pain meds was painful. Afterward, it hard to put me arm down for about up to 2 weeks. but the pain only lasted for a few days. but when I would put my arm down, it seemed like it was pinching me, but I think the scar tissue had to build up around it. Anyway, also the first couple of weeks also, I was kind of on edge and kind of fussy if you wanna say it, but now I'm good. I think it was just my body getting used to the different hormones.
But like I say everything is good now, I don't even notice it now, unless i feel my arm or something.
But good luck and for me this was the best decision for me and my husband. I was on Depo for like 3 years, and I was getting tired of getting the shot every 3 month.
oh well sorry it was long and good luck if this is what you decide....

I also had the IUD after my c-section and I really recommend it. You can get the copper type (mirena) which has no hormones and therefore no side effects at all.
