Anyone Taking Loestrin-24 Birth Control Pills

I, too, took Loestrin for years (I'm pregnant right now, so off them) and did not have a period. My GYN said it was normal and to be thankful.

I took Loestrin-24 before & after the birth of our 2 year old daughter. Before that, I used to take Ortho Novum 777 pills & with all birth control pills I never had a period. I started taking them when I was 18 & stopped when I was 36. I enjoyed the fact that I didn't have a period. That's why I stayed on them for so long. My doc said that it wasn't abnormal or bad for my body. I do think that when I started taking Loestrin-24 that I gained some weight. I never did with the other pills, but I was much younger & smoked too. I've been off the pills for a while now & haven't lost any weight. I'm 39 so that might have something to do with it too.

I started taking this same pill March/April 2008. My last cycle was May 31! I went to see my OB in August, and she said that everything was fine. She said that there is no need to worry; all looks good. I'm not - I'm thankful! I took the Depo shot for six years and did not have a cycle. I didn't gain weight with either.

This is not about that medicine you are on, but it prompted me to look up an email a doctor friend of mine sent me back in December. Thought I better forward it. I had forwarded it at the time to my loved ones. Read below.

We knew this young girl. Her mother taught highschool in Treherne before they moved to the Souris/Brandon area a few years ago. There is no real proof what caused these deaths however the main risk factor for blood clots in these young women would be birth control pills.

Recently this past week, Nicole Dishuk (age 31...newly graduated student with a doctoral degree about to start her new career as a
Doctor...) was flown into a nearby hospital, because she passed out. They found a blood clot in her neck, and immediately took her by helicopter to the ER to operate. By the time they removed the right half of her skull to relieve the pressure on her brain, the clot had spread to her brain causing severe damage.

Since last Wednesday night, she was battling. They induced her into a coma to stop the blood flow, They operated 3 times. Finally, they said there was nothing left that they could do. They found multiple clots in the left side of her brain. The swelling wouldn't stop, and she was on life support.

She died at 4:30 yesterday. She leaves behind a husband and a 2 year old Brandon and a 4 year old Justin. The CAUSE of DEATH - they found was a birth control she was taking that allows you to only have your period 3 times a year... They said it interrupts life's menstrual cycle, and although it is FDA approved... Shouldn't be - So to the women in my address book – I ask you to boycott this product & deal with your period once a month – so you can live the rest of the months that your life has in store for you.

I have been on this for years. But I am taking it continuously so that I do not have a period. I go off it occasionally but have yet to have a period even when I am off it for a week. Now, I am not having a period due to endemetriosis issues - they get worse when I have cycles so my dr. has opted to stop my cycles. Don't know if this helps. My weight is not an issue that I know of. I am thin for my height but have fluctuated between 128-135 for the past several years. (I am 5 ft 8).... if I was off the pill maybe I could keep it at the 128 but it is worth it more to me to not have a period and all the painful side effects i have had with it!

I take it and went through the same panic. The dr explained that the pill tells your body so well that there is no reason to prepare for a baby, that your body doesn't even build up the walls that need to come down/off if you're not pregnant (your period). I've had a period maybe 1-2 times in a year (super light, hardly a day long). I agree, how wonderful is that, but I'm hoping it's not going to cause a problem later and be one some "call in to collect money for damages" commercial...eek. I ask my doctor at each check up and am reassured it's ok, normal, etc. Looking forward to hearing from others with the same concern...I haven't experience any weight challenges or any other side effects...except my PMS is NOT as horrid!!

I'm on these too and can't tell you the last time I had a period. I also freaked and went to my ob when I hadn't had a period in a few months and she assured me that it's perfectly normal.

I've been on Loestrin (not sure what version of it) for almost one year and had 1-2 day periods. Just missed my first period in January (as someone else has written). Should be starting a period this week. I'll try to update this to let you know whether or not I started. When I called and talked to the nurse, she said I should wear protection every day since the period could start at any time. Has anyone else's doctor/nurse said that to you? It doesn't really seem logical and is kind of a nuisance but I'd rather be protected than not!

Yes. My doctor put me on them last year, after I had my son. Although I did have periods, they were very light and may only last 1-2 days. I love that! However, this past January I didn't have one at all and it scared me to death. Then in February I had one as before.
Anyway, because I hate trying to remember to take it on time and at the same time everyday, I just switched to the NuvaRing, yesterday. My doctors says that everyone whom she has given it to loves it. I don't have to worry about missing or being late on my dosage. I leave it in for three weeks and take it out for the fourth to have my period. She also said that there is enough hormones in the it that if having a period that month was incovenient for me that I could leave it in for the fourth week and start a new one the next week.

So, as I stated earlier, I just starting using this yesterday. It's comfortable and unnoticable, but I can't give my real opinion on it this early.

I took it for 25 years. I've had minimal to no periods during my entire time of taking it. My periods were minimal to nothing as well. Now I take a slightly lower dose (Loestrin-20) all the time, and I love having no period! I haven't really noticed weight gain from it either. I used to feel sick 2 weeks out of 4, but since I've been taking it, I feel great all the time. It gets my vote!
