Anyone NOT Put Their Kids in Preschool

Has anyone decided NOT to put their 2, 3, 4 year olds in an institutionalized preschool? I'm pretty set on letting my boys just be little boys before running off to kindergarten (all too soon). My husband and I are considering Pre-K, but was just wondering if any other parents have decided to skip the whole preschool thing and move directly to Kindergarten and how it turned out for your kiddos. Thank you in advance!

My oldest is 3 and so far not in preschool. I was thinking about putting her in this fall but the preschool program that we wanted filled up before I could get her in. This has turned out to be a good thing. I think that there are lots of good reasons to put kids in preschool but I also think that too many people think it is a necessity and then expect their kids to learn way too much at preschool. The only thing that a preschool can teach a child at that age that is really hard to teach them at home is the social skills. Since you have twins, this is probably not as big of a concern for you. My daughter is very reserved so I was thinking about putting her in so that she would get used to the classroom setting more than anything else and the preschool that we wanted was only 3 days a week for a couple of hours. Not a glorified daycare. So if she doesn't go, it really is not that big of a deal to me. If you don't feel like your kids need preschool, then don't feel guilty about keeping them at home. They are probably learning all the things at home that they would in preschool anyway. Re-evaluate in another year or so and if you still don't want to do it, don't.

My kid is two, and we don't plan on putting him in preschool. I honestly think preschool is taking over what the parents should be doing. Kids will be sent to kindergarten before you know it, and I want to spend as much time with mine as possible before he's in K. I see you're a Dr. Laura fan too :)! She always says what I just said. I've always thought that, so I was glad to hear her say it on her show. Good luck!!

Mine are 4 and 2. We have decided not to do preschool...actually, we never put too much thought into it b/c we didn't see the benefit. Some moms may, we just don't. I love having my boys here and teaching them and preparing them. When we go to parks and play dates, they mix very well with the other kids so I am not worried about socialization. I have a friend who put her son in one day a week and it has been really good for him. Everyone has different reasons and just needs to do what they think is best for their child:o)

Hi J..
I actually did/do have my kiddo's attend preschool, but I firmly believe kids can learn everything at home with an active parent, as they can at school. I also don't think you have to force your kids into learning at home, rather make games of it with them and have fun. You said you were considering Pre-K, so I'll make a suggestion there too :) I highly recommend going through the Olathe School District for this. The kids go into pre-school as "peer models", so they are helping kiddos with special needs, and at the same time building tolerance to differences in people. (And honestly, it is a very inexpensive preschool program.) Hope this helps you!
