Anyone Have Any Fashion Advice for a Short, Chubby Gal W/ NO Fashion Sense?

I am recently trying to turn myself into a girly-girl - lately have gotten into handbags and recently ordered a new coat. I have been wearing my hubby's t-shirts, sweatshirts and workshirts for as long as we've been married. Now that I have a 2-year-old, who is immensely curious about make-up and clothes and hair, how do I go from being a short, chubby tomboy to a bit more put together? I'm 5'2", wear a size 16-18....nothing seems to hang right or look right on me. Anyone have any suggestions for how I can glam myself up to set an example for my daughter? PS I realize that beauty is skin deep - I'm not looking for vanity, I'm looking for "I do actually care about myself". We encourage strength and knowledge and creativity above all else in our family....just wanted to add that.

What can I do next?

I'm probably the last person to ask being a bit of a tomboy myself but you can always find a few stylish things that are practical at places like Old Navy and Lane Bryant. And it doesn't have to be anything dramatic, just adding a pair of heels to blue jeans, as opposed to tennis shoes or loafers can girlie up an outfit.

Hi! Ya know I was in the same boat as you not that long ago....it's hard when your with the kids all day and not really goin "out" so why get all dressed up?!! Well I swear once I started too I felt better!! So much better!! Now my pocket book is tight and I have this thing where I tend to spend money on my kids and completely ignore my own needs at times...I mean when it comes to buying a pair of $100 shoes or a $40-$65 shirt yea right!! So anyways my FAVORITE place to shop is DOTS they have super trendy clothes and shoes and accessories even bras and panties!! Most things at top price are $13.00!! Sunglasses and earring are 5 bucks!! The people that work there are awesome and will help you if you need it always. I wear the same size as you also so no worries about that and they also have alot of the longer cute tops that cover the "baby gut" as I call it!! So try it and I'm sure you'll be hooked its a fantastic place to go!! Oh and before I forget go to DOTS.COM and register and they will send you five and sometimes ten dollar off coupons a purchace of 25 bucks.....Another favorite place of mine is Maurices.....cheap and excellent styles there too!! Good luck and happy shoppin!!!!

hi K.,

You can be girly and trendy at any size! Try getting things that are more fitted than your hubbies t-shirts. You don't want them to be tight but more fitted and DON"T tuck your shirts in as that would make you look too short waisted. Wearing v-necks is a way that you can make yourself look longer and will also give you a spot to wear fun jewelry. Jackets are also a good way to accessorize your outfit but you need to make sure they are they right length for your body (you don't want it to be too short-it will make your butt look big and you don't want it to be too long - it will make your legs look tiny) As for make-up, if you're not sure how do it go to one of the counters at the mall and have them show you how to put it on. You won't have to buy everything they put on you but a good mascara and fun lipstick is a good way to start. Need anymore advice? I love fashion and dressing people!

good luck!

Hi K.! You can wear any of the current fashion trends if you buy them in your size to fit you. Of course, in order to be comfortable and feel right - try them on! Baggy clothes just add additional pounds where you don't need them. Fitted, not tight, clothes look well on anyone as long as they are in your size and they accentuate the smaller parts of your body by slimmng your appearance. That is a good place to start! Also - dress head to toe in solid colors and avoid patterns. Any break in color with add 10#'s where you do not want it!!! I have more ideas if you would like and I could also give you free jewelry in the process! :) (Yeah-I do own a jewelry business, and would love to share it with you and a few girlfriends and share more great fashion tips with you.) Have a great day!

Go to Torrid!! That place ROCKS! I too am shorter 5' 3" and in a "larger" size. The people working are incredibly helpful and they have items in "short" they will fit you properly!! They are a little pricey but they do have great sales too! Go and check it out I am sure you will be impressed! They also have accessories to really "girly" it up if you want!

Good Luck

Hi K.,

Another source that I like (alot) is J.Jill. Their line of clothes is relaxed, yet very well put-together. I'm five foot, so finding quality and a good fit is not easy, but their clothes take you from home office to corporate office to weekend, very nicely. I can always find something there (vacation, client appointments, holidays, etc). And their womens and petite sizes are the icing on the cake! Best of all, if you don't have time to go to the store (Deer Park, St. Charles, Woodfield), you can order online 24/7! For "girly" jeans I like the Coldwater Creek bootcut jeans.

Have fun!
I.~

Hi,

I'm not the best person to give fashion advice.. but try and get this book.. you can probably just request it from the library or do and interlibrary loan request to get it...
Dress your best : the complete guide to finding the style that's right for your body / Clinton Kelly and Stacy London.

Its written by the hosts of TLC's show What not to wear. It gives tips on how to dress for women and men of all shapes and sizes... I borrowed it and it has some great tips and ideas in it.

Good luck. :)

I LOVE Lane Bryant they have your size in short or petite. Also the bigger department stores like Macy's and Carson's have nice sections for women, they also carry petites. If Lane Bryant seems expensive to you there is almost always some sort of sale and the clothes are long lasting. Also if they dont have something in your size you can get it shipped to your house for free. Check them out.
