Anyone from the Dayton Ohio Area?

Hello! My family will be moving to the Dayton Ohio area in June for 1 year. We just found out and I'm not sure where to begin. Can anyone give me a reflection on the "vibe" of the area? Regions that are family friendly, maybe even hip? Good school districts? We will likely be renting site unseen - so any feedback is REALLY helpful. So far - I'm considering kettering, purely on the basis that there is a Trader Joe's located there :)
Thanks so much.

**I GUess I should add that my husband is doing his first year of residency at Maimi Valley Hospital. Ideally we would live within 15 minutes of the hospital. We will definitely be renting since it's temporary and a first year resident, despite FINALLY being officially "Doctor" makes a very modest income - especially when supporting a family of 5. I have a smarty pants 2nd grader, so most important to us is a decent school district and being in a community with families and the ability to make friends :)

What can I do next?

What's brining you to Dayton? Just curious, because there really are lots of good areas and it would help to know where you might like to be close to.

I went to grad school at the University of Dayton, worked in Kettering and lived very close to Riverside.

Some of my professors lived in Oakwood (just south of the university) and some lived in Centerville and Miamisburg. I would definitely not recomend living just north of the university. Not a good neighborhood.

There are so many great areas. Good luck!

Dayton is such a hodge podge. We have the very wealthy and the very poor, and a lot in between. Most areas, I would say are pretty family friendly.
Downtown may be hip...but it is not really a safe area here.
The uber cool people w/ lots of money to waste, live in Oakwood (right next to Kettering). Oakwood's high taxes and stiff property rules are a turnoff to me.
But it's a nice area to live next to.
We live very close to TJ's and it is a definite perk.
My children are not in the public school system, but Kettering supposedly has great schools. Oakwood and Centerville do too.
The vibe? Hmmm....I am not sure how to describe the vibe. I'm older now, and don't care too much what other people do/have/want. I guess you could go back to the first thing I said. Hodge podge!
But there are lots of families here. Nice parks.
I will have to PM you more detailed info...

One of my good friends lives in the suburbs of Dayton...my husband lived in Miamisburg before I met him.

I'll get in touch with Rhonda - my girlfriend who lives there - and see what she can tell me....Dayton is her "hometown" so she will have nothing but great things to say about it.

Well here is so good news. Dayton has one of the only christmas tree shops in the midwest. (something my cousin and i missed when we moved from MA)

If you could get into Oakwood, you would be set. It is very expensive.
