Anyone Develop Allergies After Pregnancy?

My son was born 8 months ago--and since then I've been allergic to my wedding rings! I was really swollen while pg and couldn't wear them from about 7 mos pg and on, so when I finally lost the water weight I started wearing the rings again, only to find that I develop little red itchy bumps that turn into scaly skin.

My doctor suggested that it's a new allergy brought on by hormones, and as long as I'm nursing, I'll still have the hormones. Strange.

Anyone else experience a new allergy after having a baby?

And, by the way, does anyone know if platinum is less allergenic than white gold?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

S.,
I had the same thing happen, but it didn't start until I weaned my son. I have been told that platinum is less allergenic. I actually bought a sterling silver ring (from Tiffany's - they are supposed to have less problems with them) that I alternate every other day with my wedding rings. I did not wear my wedding rings for a few months and then started alternating with the silver. Good luck!

I swear I'm more allergic to certain things, and sensitive to more foods etc. than I was before motherhood. I have no idea if pregnancy brought this on or if age did. I'm 26 and had my daughter 5 years ago. The slight problems/allergies aren't going away LOL

Hi S.,
My son is now 22 months old and my ring allergy is still there. I went to a dermatologist and he told me that it is excezma. I have a prescription lotion which helps clear it up quickly, but I pretty much can not wear my rings at home while washing my hands, doing laundry, etc. I am still hopeful that it will go away someday.

I became allergic to our dog after pregnancy. It didn't go away when I stopped nursing and was so bad for about a year that I was on tons of allergy meds. My daughter is three and half now and it is better then it has been, but I am expecting again in August so who knows what will happen this time:) I had the ring thing happen with the scaly skin, I thought it was due to water sitting under my ring because I was washing my hands so much. I would take it off evertime I washed my hands and the scaly skin stopped happening eventually I stopped having to that but it was a year or so. Good Luck!

I also developed weird skin reactions after my second baby was born in Nov. 2006! Starting around the second week after I delivered, I started breaking out in hives all over my body. Jewellery also causes a reaction. Also, my skin now turns bright red when exposed to chlorine in the pool.

My dermatologist put me on Zertex once a night, which has controlled the symptoms. She said it is probably caused by a virus, which tricks the body into thinking it needs to release hystamine, which causes the symptoms, and typically lasts 4-6 months. Another dermatologist said it is probably caused by hormones. Whatever the cause, it is driving me crazy!

Did you have an epidural? I had one, and that caused itchiness and red bumps on my back. I wonder if that is related. I never have had anything like this before.

I developed excezma on my foot (of all places). Man does that itch. I tell you with all the changes babies do to us. My shoe size is different, my hair started turning gray, the excezma and of course the size change in my clothes. Good thing they are so sweet and loving.

Yes this does happen. I have hives that appear out of nowhere that I blame the hormones on. I hope that they settle down and that the hives go away. Sarna seems to help the itching (It is warm and cold like icy hot and covers the itching so I can get to sleep.) I hope you will be able to wear your rings again when your body get back to normal.

I had a similar reaction to my wedding ring. I took it off when I was about 7 mth preg and then put it back on when the weight came off. I had it resized so it is looseand I still get a red/raw/ichy ring around my finger.. Gets worse it i have to wash my hands alot. I started taking it off every few days and leaving it off for a day or so and it has seemed to help. I make sure my ring is clean often and its getting better.

I had gone through a full series of allergy shots for grass, ragweed, and cats several years before getting pregnant, with great results. Then, I have a baby and it's like I never endured all those shots twice a week for months and months. The results are totally gone and it sucks! Also, several weeks after I gave birth I developed Pompholyx eczema on my hands, but that went away quickly with a steroid cream. I've never had eczema at all except for that... Weird.

I too, am under the impression that weaning will not diminish the new allergies... And white gold is usually electroplated with another metal called rhodium, so maybe you're reacting to that? In that sense, platinum would be less allergenic I think, since it's not plated.

HTH!

Hi S.. Yes, I developed allergies during and after my pregnancies. I became allergic to our guinea pigs - so bad that we had to rehome them. I also developed seasonal allergies. Neither were a problem for me in the past. Neither went away after stopping nursing, I still deal with both allergies. I dont know about the ring, sorry!

I have had worse skin problems, allergies, and sensitivities after weaning my kids. I do have a platinum wedding ring and have had no problem with that at all though.

Good luck!

I've never really had seasonal allergies..until I had my first child....and that was 3 years and another child ago. I still have them, and they're AWfUL!! I never realized how much people suffer with these things. But, it's nothing I can't manage. My doctor is pretty sure it was brought on by pregnancy...or a really huge coincidence.

Wow, this is fascinating to me...I never had any allergies before having children. After my first child was born (almost 21 years ago, ugh!), I developed some really weird food allergies. That was it, though, until just a couple of years ago when I started having pre-menopausal symptoms and suddenly became allergic to our dog. Now I'm really intrigued to see what the connection is between the hormones and allergies!

Yep! I was healthy as a horse before my 2nd pregnancy (daughter) and since then it's like I don't even recognize my body and she's 3!

I developed allergies (seasonal), sinus infections (had my first when I was about 7 months pregnant and now get them several times a year), got my first two cavities EVER, and worst of all, was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis after she was born. Pregnancy can bring on many things - the good news is sometimes the further away you get from the birth (timewise) the more minor the symptoms become. Everyone is different!

Hey S. ==
This is kind of late but I hope you still get the message. My skin allergies are definitely worse after having ds (I'm almost 8 mos. pp). I've always had really sensitive skin, but now I'm starting to get exzema again around my ears. Yick. Anyways, I think it's very common. I'm hoping this is mostly hormonal for me and will ease up when I'm done nursing. (I've had skin issues that were triggered by hormones before -- I'm assuming that all the hormones racing through me right now can't help! lol)
Have you tried putting clear nail polish on the inside of your ring? I've done it when I've wanted to wear cheap metal jewelry. It usually works for a while, then you have to repaint it. I've never done it with anything nice like platinum or white gold, so you might want to ask a jeweler first. But it's worth a shot if it lets you wear your wedding rings.
Good luck!

I had the exact thing happen with my wedding ring. I wore it on my right hand for a while. It lasted about 6 months before that finger started itching too. I just assumed it was psychosomatic. LOL

I have that same problem. My doc told me that sometimes there can be traces of other metals in the gold and my body is reacting to this. Also I have always had slight eczema but now it is horribly worse (almost to the point of not wanting to show my arms AT ALL). My son has had baby eczema and I was told that would most likely go away by age 2. He is 2 and it's worse...so I feel really bad because I think it is hereditary. My skin has become so sensitive, I always had nice skin (clear face and all) now I break-out all the time and especially before my monthly friend. The funny thing is that during my pregnancy..my sinus allergies all but went away. I didn't need to take anything for them. After I had my son, I'm right back to where I started, and then some. I felt like I could've just died when I cut the grass tonight.

Hi S.,

So my allergies, already terrible, are now worse, and it started mid-pregnancy. Suddenly I have an allergy to shellfish, mold, and certain household cleansers! My ecsema is worse, too.

Another query: Are prego women's allergies associated with allergies in their children? That is, do your children have allergies too? (This is for everyone.)
