Unable to Wear Wedding Rings...

Hello All,

We just had our second baby 6 weeks ago. During the latter part of pregnancy I was unable to wear my wedding rings. I can now wear them but for the last few weeks when I put them on I get a strange red line under one of the two. I thought at first it was because water might have been trapped under them and paid special attention to not wearing them when handling water (showers,dishes...). It didn't work so I took them back off and left them off until the line went away. I just put them back on yesterday, took them off overnight, and lo and behold the red line is back. My rings have been cleaned and sanitized and I do not wear them around water or directly after handling water. Is it possible that I have somehow developed an allergy to gold or platinum? It only happens under one ring which happens to be channel set and I always make sure it is dry before putting it on. Any ideas on what might be happening? I'd really love to be able to wear both my rings. Anybody have a similar experience?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your responses! I have my 6 week check up tomorrow and am going to run it by the doctor. Not sure if I can edit this update or not but will try to if the doctor comes up with anything worthwhile. Thanks again!!!

The exact same thing happened to me under my channel set band and it was sooooo itchy.
- I bought something called "reaction block" from a dermatologist and it worked like a charm. It resembles clear nail polish and you paint it along the inside of the band. It does not effect the ring or the sparkle whatsoever and as the coat wears off, just add another. Worked like a charm!

Are you sure they are not still a little too tight? I had to take mine off during my second pregnancy , I put them back on thinking my fingers were back to normal and they really cut in , it was around 6 weeks after birth that I could wear them again.

It's quite possible that you've developed a sensitivity to the nickel that's included with the gold/platinum in the channel set. I would hold off wearing them for a while longer until your hormones get a chance to adjust back to normal. Congratulations on your new arrival!

I have the same problem every few months. As PP said. it is probably the nickel in it. The lady at Jareds told me that many people are allergic to it. Mine is white gold and I have to have it cleaned and treated every 6 months to prevent. They do what is called Rodium plating to white gold- the treatment is covered for life with the ring purchase, but Im not sure about platinum. I just have to leave mine off each time until it heals.

I write cookbooks and had the same problem when I was in the thick of it, with all of the dishwashing. I had to keep my wedding ring off until the problem completely cleared up. It took a few weeks, but once it was gone it was gone. It was so itchy, so I'm glad it's gone. Good luck.

I am glad to hear I am not the only one who has had this problem. My rash cleared up over time and I now after 4 years can finally wear my wedding ring. I still take it off at night. I also cannot wear ANY earrings. I break out immediately--it doesn't matter if it is nickel free, or gold, or cheap stuff. I did use some block stuff like clear nail polish which helped but did not truly solve it. Hang in there.

Try putting a thin coat of clear nail polish on the ring where it touches your finger. This did not work for me but has worked for others. Good luck.

I have the same thing and it is a skin condition. You will need a steroid cream to get it to clear up completely. Your dr will address this at your visit. Good luck!

I am allergic to cheap metal, like earrings. I have to wear 14 K gold, or I get an infection with the 10K or lower. It's not that uncommon to be allergic to some type of metal.

Are your bands wide? A few years ago I got a an extra band (as an anniversary gift) that I stacked with my wedding band and engagement ring. It made the whole set a little wider and although it was the same size as the others they all fit more snugly because of the width. A few weeks into wearing it I got a red line like you described and it even peeled a little bit. I just figured it was all a bit too tight and quit wearing the third ring all the time. The red line went away soon after. Maybe your rings are just a little tighter than before? Or maybe you still have a little swelling that is unnoticeable to you but still makes your rings a little tight? I'd give it a few weeks longer but if it continues maybe you can get them re-sized up a half size or so and see if that helps. I'm sure you're bummed to not be able to wear them, good luck!

This just started happening to me a month ago and I have been married for 6 years. I spoke to a pharmacist who said she thought it was eczema, which may have been caused by a cleaner. I have used the same cleaner forever, but she said I could have become sensitive recently (my son is 11 months). She recommended I remove the rings until they heal and in the meantime soak the rings in clean water to try to remove all cleaner residue. I put vaseline on the red area each night for 3 nights. I put the rings back on this morning after 3 days of not wearing and so far so good. Good luck!

At 6 weeks, your blood vessels are still working hard. They are trying to heal the "damage" the baby caused. LOL

If the rings are tight-ish you should keep them off for another month. No more salty foods and no caffeine. Then in a month try it again. The red line should be gone. The rings should roll around your finger fairly easily.
