Hi M.,
Try crushing the pill and putting it on a small amount of jam.
Hopefully it will go easily. Good luck.

My son, who will be 5 yrs old soon, has pneumonia and was supposed to start Orapred last night. I have never had a problem getting medicine of any kind down him until now--he threw it back up within about 2 mins. :(
Obviously I am calling the pediatrician when they open, but in the meantime has anyone else successfully managed to get this nasty stuff into a young child who has already had issues with it? My other two kids have had it before, but we did not have this problem. I wonder if a) he could swallow a pill (I know they are pretty small), or b) if I could break/crush the pill form.
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!
Thanks for responding!
I did get the dissoveable tablets--they didn't have those when my first daughter started Orapred! They're still not the best tasting thing, but he's ingesting them without gagging so I am happy. He's well enough to go back to school, so he is happy as well. :)

i have a 6 yr old daughter who has had pneumonia many of times. i also had the problem of it coming back up on her but it was because she was so upset when taking it..i have learned to use a dropper to the back side of the mouth so it dont get much of the taste on the tounge...and then give crackers right after to help get rid of the taste....that seemed to help out alot and worked for us...good luck with it..

When I had to give my son medication when he was that age, I always added the liquid to a bit of applesauce, spiced with some cinnamon. If its in pill form, use a pill crusher and add it to the applesauce that way. As long as he didn't see me getting it ready, he would eat it all for me with no problem!
I used to give both my sons pills at age 5. They go down perfectly in a spoon of applesauce. Good luck. Being a parent sure is a challenge.
My daughter took oraped.. but it was the kind that melted. It worked really good.. check with the pharmacy see if they have the kind that melts on the tongue.. good luck Otherwise try a spoonful of ice cream or applesauce with it chopped up in it..
My son has asthma so has had to take orapred a few times. Our pharmacy flavored it bubblegum, maybe if you go back to the pharmacy they can still do that - it costs an extra $2 but is worth it.
My dtr used to have difficulty taking medicine and it used to come back up, we would give her marshmellows right after. It was sweet and took her some time to chew and swallow, by then the medicine taste was gone and she was able to keep it down.
My son frequently takes orapred because of his asthma. I know there is a kind of orapred that tastes like tropical punch, our pharmacist got it for my son. But if you can't find that, the pill is so tiny that if you put it in a teaspoon of applsauce or pudding, he'll never know the difference.
I had to have the inject-able version given to my kids. Even the pharmacist wished me luck when I went to have the script filled for the oral stuff. He tried to mask it and they still threw it up. The doctor has us come in and she gave them all an injection. It was so much easier and they were all very brave. Good luck!
my 2 and a half year old son vomited it up too last month- the pharmacy can add flavor to it- like bubble gum but it still is gross. i put a dab of it on my tongue to see why he was reacting to it the way he was and almost puked myself. it leaves a weird feeling on the tongue so the pharmacist suggested tilting my son's head back a bit & administering it to the back of his cheek or tongue. also, be sure to have some juice nearby to drink away the flavor- and a towel in case it comes back up again. good luck!
I put it into a small glass of grape juice to hide the nasty taste.
Perhaps his body knows more than the doctor, maybe he needs a different antibiotic. If he didnt have a problem taking it, its odd that he threw it up. Switch meds.
