I have thought about this before and what I came up with is keep the phantom screen and just put a kid gate up when the door is open.
I like the invisable screen door type (ie: phantom) but they only have a magnetic lock and retract with pressure which will not work with the kiddo's. I am looking for something that looks nice and can lock. Our door has a window the length of the door so I do not want a screen door that can show thru and cover the window up?? Anyone with ideas????

I'm not sure what your door or the door you might purchase looks like, but can you add a hook and eye bolt? (I hope that term is right) Put it up high enough so only adults can reach.
Hi Kirstin,
Have you looked on Lowe's ot Home Depot.com? Also, some window manufacturers or installers may have ideas for you.
I think most screen/storm doors that have screens will be "divided" and you will be able to see them through your inside door.
I'd check the home improvement stores websites for ideas.

I as Adena have put a baby gate up when it was hot and wanted the door open for the same reason (couldn't find a correct lock) but that was a couple of years ago they may make something now
After several run thru's (by both adults and children) I went on line and printed stop signs. You can find them in clip art. Print them out and use a Uhoo glue stick to affix them to the screen door (both directions). One at adult level and another at kid level. Great discussion topic when your other guests visit the house.
I don't have any specific recommendations, just that my sister had a generic screen door that latched shut well enough that her toddler couldn't push it open, and I think that it might have locked too. But, the recommendation I want to make is that my sisters screen door had the screen part in the middle and glass on top, so they switched those two pieces so her toddler couldn't push the screen part out. So, that is something to think about and look at.
Good Luck!
If this is your front door or just one door...they do make a screen door that is full glass and you can lower the top to let air in. Our friends had one and it was really nice. They are somewhat expensive. There are also full screen doors that don't have the storm window and you can just add a couple of looks to it. I hope you find something that works. I have an escaping child of my own, so we just keep the front door bolted and if it is open I lock our front gate.
Best of luck.

we bought a screen for our front door at home depot that has windows on the top and bottom (all glass front) and the screen is built in the top so when you lower the window the screen comes down. it works great i have 3kids and a dog so i did not want the screen to be on the bottom. it also has a lock and a closer that you can adjust the tension to close slow and it closes all the way by it self.
Kirstin,
I too am a SAHM with two adorable busy boys!!! Mine are 4 and 2 1/2, and we have the phantom screens that you are talking about. We have them on three doors that open up to the back deck, one is just a regular door, and the other two are french doors. The french doors have double screens, one side of the screen locks into the door frame when open, so that you only have to open one side of the screen to get in or out. They are magnetic, and retract when the kids run into them...BUT, you can look at that as a good thing too! My kids (and husband) have run into them before, and the screen is still intact because it retracted!! Also, when they retract (by accident), they make a loud clang when they hit the metal frame that they're stored in...which scared the kids enough to deter them from touching them! They are absolutley wonderful screens and I highly recommend them. I would just be sure to teach the kids not to mess with them. You could also do the baby gate in front of it, if you have really little ones. I would definately put a screen on the door if you want it open though...if not, you'll have a house full of bugs! Good luck with your search!
