Any Input on Jewish Day Schools in Chicago?

Right now my daughter is at Schechter in Northbrook (kindergarten). Long story short, I didn't grow up in the Northshore and I don't know how happy I am about my family growing up here, either. We're thinking about the Jewish schools in the city, b/c that is the deal I made with my husband. I am fine w/ sending my kids to a Jewish school, but up here I feel this sense of entitlement that I just don't like. I hope I didn't offend anyone. Personal opinion, take it w/ a grain o' salt. Thanks

Hi R.,

My husband used to work at Anshe Emet. I know he thought the curriculum and teachers were great. If he was still working there we had talked about having our kids go someday. I'm pregnant with my first and the little guy was due yestereday :)

Hope that helps,
J.

I have a friend who used to teach 5th grade science at Anshe Emet and said it was a good program.

I also know someone that is the director of a day school in Lincoln Park, I think. I'll see if I can get some info on it.

Good luck!

Hi R.,

I cannot offer advice about Jewish schools in the city since I am not familiar with them. What I can say is that unfortunately, the "northshore" gives Jews a bad rap. I believe it to be the area the kids grow up in vs being Jewish or not. And I do know what you are talking about the kids/families feeling they are "entitled" to certain things. Again, I feel it's the area, not being a Jew per se. I am a conservative Jew & grew up in Wheeling. I think it boils down to where you live & how you are raised. I worked for everything & was never handed things on "silver platter" never feeling I was automatically entitled to anything. I am pregnant with my 1st child & live in Gurnee. We are looking for a sense of Judiasm up here - temple, people, etc. But it's a slow growing Jewish community up here. Anyway, sorry for the rambling...just my two cents worth. Good luck in finding the school that meets your needs.

I don't know the name, but there is a new school that just opened on the far north side of Chicago and I have a friend whose son goes there. They are great about financial aid and seem like they are really trying to establish a strong community amongst the parents and children. I believe because they are so new that they only go from K to 3rd grade, but they are building on a grade each year. Good luck with your school search!
