My 4 yr old adores her aunt, who is in the army. she is going to be deployed to over seas soon and i know she is going to miss her dearly. are there any childrens books out there that explain the military to kids and why their family members may go away for a little while. i will be talking with her, obviously, but just wondering if there are any books on the matter as she loves to read an thought it would be a good way to reaffirm whatever i talk to her about.
Thanks!

If you google "Books for children about military deployment," you'll find a number of options.

I can't give any recommendations among the offerings, but perhaps someone else will be able to do that.

Sesame Street makes some fantastic DVD's for kids about deployment. "Talk, Listen, Connect" is the one we have. I think it's very well done.

As far as books go, most bookstores have sections for kids books related to deployment. I'd check those out.

And a final suggestion is to have her Aunt read and record one of their favorite books to read together. That way, you can have her Aunt "read" her a book even when she's gone. I would just sit with my kids and turn the pages, and Dad would read them a story. Good luck!
