Hello moms, my daughter is 8yo and loves potato chips. Sour Cream and Onion Lays are never safe in my house. She will soon be competing in gymnastics and I am trying to make her diet a bit more healthy. (She is very trim and strong.) I stopped buying chips all together but I let her choose one snack for a road trip and she chose the chips. I was wonder if anybody had any ideas for a healthier alternatives for SC & O Lays???
Thanks for all the advise ladies, I plan on buying the SC & O popcorn topping and trying that on popcorn. If she is doing the sprinkling, it may be the fun factor that works for it. I am also going to try the veggie chips and the baked chips. I do let her have chips for lunch but when she gets home from school, she will devour the whole bag if I'm not careful :) Here's looking to a bit more healthier diet :) Yea!!!

I agree with the other post about the Baked Lays. THey are much lower in fat, and taste pretty good. Otherwise, we just discovered something called Popchips. They are available at Costco, but you can probably find them other places too. They are low fat and really good!

my favorite potato chip alternatives are the root veggie crisps by Flat Earth... They might actually have a sour crem/onion flavor too. I know they have cheddar (a weakness of mine) and Sally's (I think) pita chips. I find those in the produce section near the hummus usually. The "bare naked" ones are good, as are the lightly slated. haven't tried any other flavors, but the cinnimon are always tempting. The regualar ones are SO yummy with mango salsa... mmm...

Our kids like some of the Pirate's Booty and other stuff in the natural section of the chip aisle. I can't remember who the maker is. There's lots of varieties. You're bound to find something she would like.

My kids love the Frito Lay BAKED cheetos, natural. They aren't all messy with the orange goop and they actually have some vitamins in them! They love them. Not overly salty at all either.
Also I buy baked potato chips if they really want chips or Pringles as they are less oils and fat in them.
You can get so many varieties of chips in the chip aisle that are a better alternative, baked, organic, even my kids LOVE those veggie chips, where it is actually veggies in them! There is a wide variety in the chip section, take her with you and tell her to only pick natural or baked ones.
Try the veggie chips, they are great!

Why not make a Sour Cream and Onion dip. You can use fat free sour cream which will cut down the cals and you can limit how much you pack. Then you can pack a bunch of baby carrots and she can have the crunch with the flavor and it will be a bit healthier than the chips.

Hi B.,
After I did some "label reading" on some of the snack food that we were consuming we cut out Doritos (for starters) and replaced our chips with Wavy Lays and Fritos. The Doritos were laiden with all kinds of junk as well as Red #40 which is a known toxin. With our two current choices we are getting exactly what is advertised..potato chips and corn chips nothing more, nothing less. It was more important to me that we eat healthier then it was to appease the taste buds and our flesh. You're the Mom, that makes you the authority. Eventually our poor eating habits catch up to us. Make the right choice for your daughter now before she's not so trim and strong. God Bless, L.

I fshe is only getting them on the occasion that you all are taking a road trip, I don't see the harm in a small bag. Just keep them out of the house. Veggie Fries from Whole Foods are good and crunchy. I don't think they come in SC & O though.

Almonds are a great way to satisfy a craving. I have even used them to curb the chocolate desire. I've never really looked at the labels to make certain, but I think that Flat Earth Chips and Sunchips might be healthier. My kids love them when I buy them. I believe both of them ae bked not fried. And the Flat Earth chips are made out of better ingredients, I think. Anyway, it might be worth checking out.

I would try Whole Foods they have veggie chips, organic chips and they are flavored. If you don't have a Whole Foods near you some grocery stores are carrying them.

If you are a member... Costco sells fruit crisps (1/2 of the pkgs are apple, the other half are strawberry/ bananna) that have the look and feel of chips. Both of my kids love them! They also sell (in the chip section) veggie chips. If your daughter is insistent on chips... you could also buy the baked version of Lays, etc. Not the healthiest option, but perhaps a compromise.

B. P,
My son went through that stage too, he will now go for an apple or pickle for a snack now. I stopped buying potato chips but on occasion like superbowl or if we have nacho supreme once a month. If you substitute fruit yogurt or something like that for awhile they will get into the habbit of eating them. If the kids get a salt craving we do keep crackers in the cupboard and they will put cheese on them for a little snack. Works in our home.

Pretzels are a great alternative! My daughter loves the butter flavor twists and the other shape is a square that looks like a grid. Anyway, they provide that "chip" like crunch, but are WAY less fat and better for you! There are pretzel rods, twists, nuggets, and traditional pretzel shapes - have your daughter pick out the one she wants!

If it's just a snack for a read trip, then I would just let her have them. Don't deprive her of something that she really enjoys or it will backfire. When you aren't around that is all she is going to want to eat.

Let her eat the chips! It sounds like she is eating healthy 90% of the time so it is ok to have these every once in a while! I think if kids are not exposed to these kinds of foods a little bit they can't learn to regulate these foods later themselves! That said, my kids love apple or grapes and cheddar cheese( Tillamook, yes it has fat but it also has protien and calcium). Sun chips has a SCO flavor, not super healthy but a little better than potato chips) Like you said she is fit and trim, you are doing a great job mom!

Let her be a kid! It is not like she is inactive and fat. Potatoe chips every once in a while do not hurt. If your that worried you could always try baked chips.

I am no dietician, but------I have had friends trying to lose weight kick a potato chip habit and they have told me part of the satisfactions comes with the crunch and nuts are offered through their diet plan as alternatives. I don't know if your daughter would go for it but almonds and cashews, amongst other nuts, have good fats in them and sometimes come with flavorings (or maybe you could make your own with some of the toppings they have for popcorn---I think they have a SC & O one). You can get the nuts with or without the salt, depending on what her tastes are. Plus they have some protein to give her some fuel and building blocks for muscle development that would help for her gymnastics.
Best wishes.

I agree with most of the posts...I would still let her have the chips. When I was running cross country in high school there was a lot of focus on making sure we had enough to eat. She's burning more so she might need more anyhow. As for a different kind of chip? My kids LOVE Sun Chips. They don't last very long in my house. We're not restricting regular chips in this house...Sun Chips are just the preference. Yummy!!

Hey B., if your daughter is as fit and active as you say, why are you worried about potato chips? They can easily be part of a healthful and balanced diet, even for an athelete, especially for an athelete. They need the calories and for people with low body fat, they need the fat calories.
Let her choose the chips. Withholding them only creates scarcity which leads to craving which leads to bingeing. Take away the drama and let her choose a snack she likes that she can enjoy in moderation.
