Hey Moms,

My almost 4 yr old daughter has been having on and off diarrhea for at least the last 9 days. She was sent home from school Monday before last because she had an "explosion" during school. She seemed okay when she was at home but we made her eat boring BRAT foods just to be safe. Everything was fine so she went back to school on Wednesday. Then Friday morning she had diarrhea and Saturday morning too (I think). Today she had diarrhea, again. She has also been having regular poops in between all this and has been acting fine/eating fine this entire time. I placed a call to her doctor to see what they have to say, but I'm just curious if anybody else has been going through this. It's kind of strange that it has been going on for so long!

As for eating and drinking, she has not had anything unusual. She drinks mostly water and does eat a decent amount of fruit. In the past if she has had too much fruit then she has had lots of diarrhea, but just for that day. Today she had an orange during breakfast and a California Cutie at lunch.....and just informed me that they had grapes and strawberries for snack. Maybe she did have too much fruit today. We are big fruit eaters so I wouldn't have expected it to affect her but maybe it does sometimes.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, she has been fine since Wednesday. Haven't really given her a lot of fruit, just an apple and a couple oranges because they have been having lots of fruit at school. I also gave her Culturelle probiotic yesterday and today. Hopefully she will be bacck on track now.

You may want to get her tested for Giardiasis (Giardia Lamblia), a little parasitic infection whose symptoms can come and go. It is rare, but may be fairly common in some day care settings. If it lasts more than two weeks, I would get her tested. My son had it for 18 months and I had it for 5 months before it was diagnosed. I became deathly ill.

The test is done from a stool sample and back them it cost about $30.00. It did not come back positive until the third test for my son (this is actually fairly common).

Since it was so difficult to get our cases diagnosed, I have suggested that other people suffering from chronic diarrhea tell their doctors that they may have been exposed to the parasite. Two friends have had symptoms, followed my advice, and have been diagnosed. Perhaps the illness is not as rare as the doctors think!

Subject: QUICKEST WAY TO STOP DIARRHOEA
When someone gets diarrhoea, sometimes the solution is so easy, we wonder why anyone has to suffer.

Of all the ingredients here, the most potent is Rice, but not in the usual form we eat it in, and neither would rice porridge work too well.
The secret is in rice water. This is already known in this region.

When Dr Albert Winsemius came to Singapore for a farewell and thank you dinner in his honour, he brought along his wife Aly and his granddaughter, Jolijn. Both women came down with very bad gastroenteritis. They saw the doctor who gave them medication. It was slow to work.

Mother boiled some rice in lots of water and went to their hotel with two 1.5L bottles of rice water. I cringed in shame at the offer of this folk remedy, which seemed so primitive to me. Never heard of this cure before. To my surprise, it worked, and they were even able to go out for dinner the next day. Both were exclaiming how the rice water did the trick of making them well again. Well, lucky it worked, I thought to myself.

I was discussing this some years back with Kim Ng, the ex-matron of KK Hospital . She said, yes, that is what Professor Wong Hock Boon, the
notable pediatrician teaches. I was shocked and made some comment how could he? It was common knowledge so what had he to do with it?

Many months later, I found out that Prof Wong Hock Boon had presented a paper on it at some conference after he had done clinical trials.

Then his results were published in the Lancet, the Medical Journal all doctors read. In fact, I was told he was credited for saving the lives
of 2 million African babies by this method.

It is rice water and not rice, that does the trick. I have found it effective again and again.
THE EXACT RECIPE
You take a handful of rice and boil it in a large saucepan with lots of water. Like three or four large glasses. Then you cool that and drink the water. If you are in a hurry to relieve the ailing person, take the saucepan off the fire and dunk it in a frying pan or basin of cool water with ice cubes if necessary. This gives the patient a chance to drink the rice water sooner and cure himself or herself sooner.

When drinking the rice water, make sure there is lots of it. You have to tell the patient that enough water must go in to line your guts from
throat to other end, all 10 to 12 metres of it. If you take rice, it stays in the stomach. If you take broth, some of it may go into the small intestine.
But if you take rice water, it will carry rice grains to every inch of your small and large intestine to the end where the problem is.

How does it work? Even Prof Wong Hock Boon doesn't know. Read the article by going to the web-site

It is good to pass on the news to everyone you know because the complaint is so common and people suffer unnecessarily. You would be
doing your friends a great favour to relieve them of their misery when the occasion arises.

i think there may be some kind of virus out there that is TOUGH...i have a friend whose 16 month old has had the same thing for literally, almost 2 months...doc keeps telling her it is a virus that he hasn't kicked...i would be more inclined to think parasite, but i don't think you are alone in this.

Have her checked for food allergies - my best friend just went through this with her 3yr old daughter and found out the child was allergic to dairy. Poor baby, her very favorite thing to drink was "nilk" and now she can't have it. Turns out she also has to stear clear of gluten and peanuts. No one in the family has any allergies so this was a huge surprise. Maybe keep a dialog (and have the caregiver/teacher) help keep a list of each thing she eats to see if one item triggers the diarrhea. If you think it is the cause, cut it out of the diet for at least 5 days then reintroduce it. If it causes a reaction then you know it is the culprit, if not then keep checking on something else. When I went through allergy testing, they told me most often the food allergy is one of your favorite things . . . Good luck to you both and God bless!

My 3 year-old also has some sort of stomach issue that has come and gone for the last 8 days. He vomited 8 days ago, then three days later had diarrhea, and now vomited again last night, but in between times has seemed completely fine. My husband got sick last night too, but so far the rest of the family has been fine. Maybe there's something going around?

Two things stood out to me in your story. 1) Sugar. Although it's fruit, there are still lots of sugar. Try cutting back on the amounts of sugar she consumes.
2) Citrus. Citrus juice can be really hard on their tummy.

We found this out the hard way. Our daughter gets a very upset tummy if she eats too much sugar or citrus.
