My daughter is 20 months old and has been having diahrea and some very soft stools. Today she went 5 times.
She doesnt seem to be in much pain and has been kind of gassy but I have taken milk out of her diet and nothing has changed. Her stool is also very foul smelling and odd colors. Anyone have any ideas of what could be causing this?
She had normal hard stools a couple weeks ago. She is getting two new teeth but Im not sure if this would cause loose stool for over a week.Any suggestions would be great.

What can I do next?

Like the previous posters said, could be the teething or a virus. And if she wasn't this way until recently (and she recently started teething), it's a good bet it's not a food allergy.

Could be teething or a virus of some kind. My kids had that kind of a stomach bug this week as well. Luckily it only lasted a day or so. I give my kids yogurt after a digestive upset or antibiotics (to replenish the good bacteria) but you can get probiotics from a health food store too.

Hi Mama

Teething can cause loose bowels, because there is more salvia created. However there are a lot of causes of loose stool. You’re well aware of stomach bugs, but foods can cause issues too, especially if there is a sensitivity. Keep a food journal for the next few days tracking what she ate and if/when a tummy issue happened. If it is a food related issue, a tummy issue should happen within an hour or so of the food.

Good Luck

A lot of people will tell you that teething will do it. Have you completely eliminated all dairy from her life -not only milk -for over a week? She may just have a virus. My sons alternately vomited and had diarrhea over a month last summer, and it almost drove me nuts! I had them both at the doctor when it didn't go away soon, and she said it was a virus strain that could take 2 weeks to get out of their systems. You should probably give her doctor a call tomorrow. There's not a lot they can do, but they may have some ideas and can make sure she's not dehydrated. Give lots of water! Juice can aggravate diarrhea, but she really needs liquids -get some Pedialyte.

Rotavirus!

Rotavirus is the most common cause of severe diarrhoea among infants and young children. It is a genus of double-stranded RNA virus in the family Reoviridae. By the age of five, nearly every child in the world has been infected with rotavirus at least once. However, with each infection, immunity develops, and subsequent infections are less severe.

Rotavirus A, the most common, causes more than 90% of infections in humans.

Accounts for up to 50% of hospitalisations for severe diarrhoea in infants and children

Rotavirus is usually an easily managed disease of childhood, but worldwide more than 500,000 children under five years of age still die from rotavirus infection each year and almost two million more become severely ill.

~when you change diapers wear gloves
~spray chaning area after each change (hospital grade cleaners work great or bleach water)
~wash hands tons
~push juice and water. every 20 mins she needs to drink something.

if in daycare or preschool let them know and keep her home for the day.

wishing you all the best!

I have a son that had these same problems when he was young. It was related to food allergies/intolerances and yeast (candida). If you would like me to tell you how I changed his diet you can email me at ____@____.com Also, powdered acidophilus in his applesauce or rice milk helped too.

Best,

Put her on a gluten free diet for a few weeks and see if that helps. If it does look into Celiac disease or any other type of hypoglycemia.

The other solutions are to have the doctor send her stool sample out to test for parasites. If she has any they must be treated for her digestive system to return to normal.

Your instincts are good. In all diseases taking milk products out of the diet is the first step to healing.
