Affordable Non-toxic Twin Mattress

My 3 year old is moving up to a big girl bed and I'm looking for a mattress that is not treated with PBDE (the flame retardant chemical). I've looked at mattresses at earthsake and european sleepworks in berkeley (which are non toxic options) but they are really expensive! I've heard Ikea doesn't use PBDE, but then have also heard that their mattresses sold in the U.S. are treated with some other chemical that is flame retardant (anyone know more about that?). I looked at bit at organic futons, but seems they are also treated. I'm thinking there must be someone out there who has done this research and can pass on some tips - hopefully more affordable than the 2 shops mentioned. Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for your responses. I kept doing research and a friend told me that European Sleepworks on Adeline in Berkeley actually has a kids line that they don't advertise and is NOT on their website, so I went to the store and found a great natural, non-toxic, non chemically treated mattress for $389 - well below anything else I had seen. Yeah! The mattress is firm and is a bit thinner than their usual twin (which runs $1,200) - they make it especially for kids at an affordable price to help keep kids off of toxic mattresses. I also learned that you can get a non-treated futon at Thousand Cranes on 4th St. in Berkeley - either an organic cotton futon for which you need a doctor's note saying not to treat it with flame retardant, or a non-organic cotton and wool futon for which you don't need a note (wool is naturally flame retardant). These will run somewhere between 200 and 300 for a twin size depending on thickness you choose.

Hi E.,
Sleep is very important, statistics say that 1 out of 3 children have problems sleeping. They are finding that sleep issues are a result of behavior conditions, there are natural ways to help with this condition.

I am introduced to a Children's wellness Expo on Aug 2 in Sunnyvale. There will be 13 doctors from around the country sharing alternatives to address the needs of our children today. It is very exciting to have an event like this in the States. They have them in Europe and now here.

If this is something that interests you, email me and I will send you a flier and put you on the guest list as there is limited seating.

Wish you well.

Hi... I purchased our organic non-flame retardant crib mattresses at Rockridge Kids. We are happy with them and they were RELATIVELY reasonable. I wonder if that same company makes twin mattresses. I would call Rockridge Kids and ask them. Good luck!

will you post your findings as I am interested in the same when our kids move out of their cribs.

J.

Naturpedic mattresses online are organic and no flame retardants. We bought our baby's crib mattress there. There is also the choice of an organic latex mattress. The Mary Cordaro collection is sold somewhere in SF. Go to her website at www.H3environmental.com We are going to get a new adult bed from her and a bed for our baby when he outgrows the crib.
Good Luck!

I am wracking my brain trying to remember the name of the place I ordered my son's mattress from! I found their ad in the back of Mothering magazine, checked their website, and found that they made a mattress that was one inch thinner than typical, but cost a lot less- I think I paid about $400 for a twin. It's natural latex with wool and organic cotton. no chemicals. We've had it for three years and been very happy with it. I slept on it last night in fact, after crashing out putting my son to bed, and had a good night's sleep. Again, wish that I could find the name, but you might find it in the back of Mothering, or just do an online search like ,"organic chemical free blah blah blah best price." Good luck!

Go to IKEA. They don't treat any of their products with that chemical (I was looking into PBDE free couches earlier and found this out.)
