Recently I have had a biopsy done in my uterus after they found two polyps and a thick lining. Good news is the results were negative to any abnormal cells. However, the dr still would like to thin my lining and help with my heavy (horrible) periods. So, I was given two choices for now because I am not sure I am done having kids. One was to go on a progesterone shot for three months or two go on a very low dose birth control pill. I don't know what to choose, side effects etc...any adice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

I agree with Cate...same thing, different delivery. How often would the shots be and are you good with needles? Progesterone shots are pretty nasty - the needle is large (both long and thick), the stuff is in a very thick oil that takes a little time and effort to push in and you have to take the shots in the thigh or hip. It's a bit of a production, and it hurts. If it's daily, I would take a pill.

Congrats on your good tests - you must be relieved!

I think they are pretty much the same-just different forms of receiving the meds. If that is the case I would just go with what you are more comfortable with and which is cheaper under your insurance.

I would avoid any artificial hormones. The body just gets more messed up on them...you could ask my two best friends. Read Dr. John Lee's Perimenopause book for bio-identical progesterone. It's fantastic and covers fibriods (not sure if same as polyps) and how to do it with BI progesterone. There's also a fantastic dr my friend goes to in Bloomingdale that treats with BI and supplements and has helped her period that would never stop. PM me if you want his name. I can't think of it off the top of my head.

If it's going to thin out your uterus, the pill must also be a progesterone pill... sometimes they call that the "mini-pill." Anyway, the side effects would be the same either way because it's the same hormone just oral vs shot.

Have you taken progesterone before?

If not, I'd say go with the pill. That way if you have a bad reaction to it, you can stop taking them and it'll be out of your system in a day or so whereas the shot is in you for the duration and there is no way to undo that.

If you KNOW you do fine with progesterone, I'd get the shot because then it's just done and you don't have to think about it (I'm assuming he's talking about a shot that lasts for 3 months or so).

Just thinking, have you thought about acuptuncture? I know there is alot of research about them helping with your cycle, flow, and fertility.
