My parents want to buy my daughter a tricycle for her 2nd birthday. We're looking at the Kettler Happy Navigator or the Kettler Blossom which is significantly less expensive. Just curious if you have either and if the Happy Navigator is really worth the extra money.

So What Happened?

Thanks for everyone's advice. We did end up getting the Kettler Blossom with the pushbar. She's about a 1/4 inch away from being able to pedal, but loves walking herself around on it and loves being pushed with the pushbar.

We had a Kettler for our kids (and I honestly can't remember which one it was), but one problem I had with it was that when you push the tricycle the front pedals did not move. So my kids took a LONG time actually getting the concept of pedaling your feet to make the tricycle go. I actually ended up wishing I'd just bought a classic Radio Flyer trike, which would have been much cheaper too.

Of course I never checked to see if the design of the RF one had been changed in the 35 years or so since I'd had a tricycle - maybe they all have those coaster pedals now? But it's just something to think about.

Also the latch that held the back bucket broke at one point so it would just drag the ground behind the tricycle.

K.,
I don't know if this will reach you in time, but we got our 2 yr old a Big Wheel instead of a tricylce. He loves it! The lower center of gravity and the frontward peddling was easier then the downward peddle of a trike. The only place I have seen them is a Target.
Good Luck!

We have the folding Radio Flyer tricycle. There is no parents handle, but it does have a cute "trunk" on the back for the kids to put thing in. The seat is adjustable. The rear wheels fold in so you can hang it when not using it, and they lock in place when not folded. My boys love it! I don't see the point in spending a ton of money when you can get this one for about $35.

I agree that she'll get more out of another gift (like a wagon) at this stage, but if that's what you're getting...go with the thought that besides the big ticket items most things aren't worth the extra dough...I'd skip the trike altoether and get a lil bike that in 2 years you can take the training wheels off...for my 4th son we did that...$30 bucks for a bike in a box from target and we got 3 summers out of the thing...and he rode it everyday weather permitting!!!

developmentally children aren't ready for a tricycle until age 3. is there something else your parents could get for her that she would be able to enjoy at this stage of her development?

Hi K.,

We got the Happy Navigator for my daughter when she was two. It took her until she was three to learn to pedal on her own, but because it has the handle I just pushed her around for the first year. The streets in our neighbor hood have very large hills so even now that she is 3 1/2, I still have the handle on to make sure she doesn't go flying down the hill.
We have gotten a lot of use out of it and expect to get a lot more. I'm not really sure what the difference is with the Blossom though.
All the best,
B.
