Public schools have programs which are all free and have specialists who work for them. Just contact them and if your local schools don't check out the districts with schools of choice.

check with your local school district. Alot of times they can provide speech and other evaluation services and provide any help you may need. Call the "special services" department. Good luck!
Call the neurologist, get the specific diagnosis codes they use and then call your insurance company again with those codes. Also, ask to speak to a manager...the ins company customer service reps are usually useless (sorry...I work in medicine). If a doctor has determined that your child NEEDS this eval, you can usually appeal the denial and get it approved prior to the appointment. Sometimes the doc may have to dictate a letter to the ins company, and don't be afraid to ask them to. Don't give up...a 'no' from an ins company is not the final answer!

Kids are eligible for "Early Intervention" until age 3 and it is a free program. They will set up an in home visit with specialists to evaluate your child and then proceed with what they deem necessary from there. Michigan's early intervention program is called "Early On." You can check it out here and refer your own child...
They have to contact you within 10-14 days and your child must be evaluated with 45 days. They have all the info and resources available to them to help you find the help your child needs and ways to pay for some services that might not be free. Please call them. There is no cost to you for the referral or evaluation, and it can only help... Best of luck to you and your family. God Bless.

I have been down this road. Autism is a spectrum disorder
so there are many different looks to it. From severe to very high functioning.
The earlier you get intervention the better.
Every county has a public program that will evaluate your son for free and place him in a program (if needed) for free.
Here in Livingston county it is LESA (Livingston Educational Service Assoc.) They will have a team of 4 to 6 people that will evaluate your son while you are there with him. One person is an Ocupational Therapist (OT) another is a Physical Therapist (PT) one for speech, one for cognitive and etc.
My son was labeled with Early Childhood Delays (ECD) he was given speech since the age two and he tested out of it by age 4 but we continued on with private speech after that and we continue with a IEP (Individual Educational Plan)so that he gets speech in school.
You will have an enormous wall in front of you dealing with
health insurance to cover anything that remotely looks like Autism they will not touch it. I appealed three times to my insurance with legal papers and documents to have speech covered and finally after three year they gave in. It was a full time job to get what my son deserves.
Luckly my son is ok and and doing well. He has caught up with
his peers (he is age 7 now).
The first step is to have your pediatrican recommend and give you the info. for your county program. It will proceed from there and you can take it one step at a time.
Just for my sons background.....he was chatting and talking appropriate words for a 12 to 15mo. old such as dada, mama,
doggy, kitty, he could even say Santa at Christmas time.
At age 15mo. he was given a heavy round of vaccines, 5 different shots. Within a week he stopped talking and could not even utter a sound. That is where it all started.
I never again let them put another vaccine in his body and I never will. We have done suppliments and homepathe to get him back and lots of speech therapy. He is awesome now with speech comprehension above his age level. It has been a hard road,
I know this may sound overwhelming. Just start with your pediatrician asking him for the county program information.
It will fall into place step by step after that. You are doing awesome by having you son evaluated so early.
We are our kids only advocates so stand firm on what you want your child to have.
If you need anymore information or have questions please email me.
Best Wishes,

( also, make sure you Dr. uses appropriate codes for insurance. The only way insurance will cover therapy and evalutaions if the codes do not read "delays or disorders".
They only tend to cover things that were associated to trama
at birth etc. If it is a delay of any sort they won't touch it. This is sooooooo wrong. By beef was this: If an adult makes a choice to go out and drink and drive and then gets in an accident and if the accident leaves them needing physical therapy or speech therapy etc. then insurance will cover it.
But if a child has a delay.....tough deal......it will not be covered. It is so frustrating and wrong)
