Adult Acne - Miami,FL

I have that wonderful adult acne that is so stubborn and never ever wants to go away and quite frankly I'm tired of it... I used to be on Yaz birth control to control it. However after I had my last daughter I had to have an emergency hysterectomy so I can't take birth control anymore because I do not get a period. I have been on Proactive religiously since January and it only controls it but I feel it's just as bad so I'm really wasting my money on it. I do not have health insurance so going to a dermatologist and getting a prescription for Retin A will be highly expensive. If it's all I can do, then I will do it. the Acne takes up my daily life and I'm very self conscious about it. Trying to avoid spending a lot of money at the doctors, can anyone recommend a product or a regimen that you have used that worked. I would appreciate it.

What can I do next?

This is going to sound counterintuitive, but I've started using pure, extravirgin coconut oil on my face. It clears blemishes practically overnight and it moisturizes really well and it's natural -- no funny, unpronounceable ingredients. Just coconut oil. It's a solid, but it melts at 76 degrees, so it goes on smoothly. It's antibiotic and anti fungal and it replenishes oils washing strips away. I think I found a great solution. Just google "coconut oil and acne"

Try Exuviance mask. I use the whole line, but when I don't use the mask to help, I get crazy break outs.

You can get it at Ulta or online. Actually, if you have the desire, try the whole line.
I use the foaming bioactive wash and then all the other products for "oily" or acne prone skin - plus the mask twice a week for break outs and to prevent.

It was a godsend as I am trying to battle break outs and manage aging skin:)

good luck (oh, it feels pricy, but seriously lasts forever. mask tube lasted me a year and wash lasts about six months, I use the hydra night gel in the day sometimes, but again only purchase about two to three times a year!)
Good luck!

A few years ago I had to see a dermatologist for an allergic reaction. I overheard a conversation he had with a client about her acne. He said "the more we do to our skin, the more it hates us." He is right. Your skin is probably desperate for a break and desperate for it's natural oils. People with acne make the mistake of stripping their face of oils, which are skin needs to be balanced. You need to simplify. Use gentle products, and not many. Stop with the acids, the peroxides, the chemicals.

I don't have acne, but was struggling with another skin issues. I was having a conversation with a lady at a park, who said her dermatologist suggested using the Yes to Blueberries line. I went to Target and bought it. It has been a week and my skin is back to how it used to be. It's amazing and gentle. I noticed the brand has a Yes to Tomatoes line, that deals with acne. Whatever you use, I HIGHLY recommend the Yes to Blueberries Intensive Skin Repair Serum. I put it on right after I was my face and it soaks in. I love the stuff!!

How old are you?

I tried it all. All the stuff at the drugstore for acne. Proactiv DESTROYED my face. Then I switched to Arbonne, and that made it even worse! I finally decided I needed to "detox" and got away from all anti-acne related cleansers and treatments. And that's when my acne started to clear. My face hated the salicylic acid, sulfur, and peroxides in the acne "cures."

I highly recommend looking into a good womens multivitamin regimen, drinking lots of water, and using a *very* mild cleanser on your face (Cetaphil, Clean and Clear sensitive, Neutrogena sensitive....something with no extras in it and no/low fragrance), and a very mild, low scent moisturizer. No "anti acne" anything. Just mild soap and mild moisturizer.

Also, avoid overwashing. You're not dirty unless you're getting all sweaty and such. I wash my face once a day, before bed, in the shower. I use my hands and work the Clean and Clear into my face, and rinse with warm (not hot) water. Don't overwash, and only exfoliate gently with an exfoliation pad or cloth once or twice a week.

Skip the harsh astringents. They irritate your skin and dry it out. While it might SEEM to make sense to dry out your acne, irritating it only makes it worse.

Don't skip moisturizing. Dry skin takes longer to heal. I use Olay Regenerist. A little goes a long way. Put it on at night before bed. Just enough so it soaks into your skin. Olay makes a lot of different products, so look for one that is mild and will work for your skin type. Again, no salcylic acid, sulfur, or peroxide.

Basically....simplify. Your skin is being overloaded.

Best of luck!

ETA: Oh! I've heard EXCELLENT things about coconut oil! And one of my friends used it with much success on her cystic acne. I might have to swich and use it for my moisturizer. Thanks, Veronica!
