Activity for Me and 8 Year Old DS

Last night I realized that me and my son aren't as close as we should/would/could be. I was thinking that it would be fun for him and I to do something together. I thought maybe golf lessons for both of us. Something that we could do once a week so we can spend some quality time together. What else would be a good idea?

Anything you can think of would be a great help.

Thanks.

Some of the things I do with my kids, individually and alone are: bike rides, hiking/walking/exploring, ice/rollerskating, martial arts, crafts, read the same book and discuss, cooking/baking, one on one basketball, I'm not a member because it's a bit pricey for me, but the YMCA (or equivalent) usually has lots of different family type activities. That's all I can think of, good luck!

Are you looking for something out of the house? Maybe a cooking class, rock wall climbing, our park district offers things like that. Hiking in your area forest preserve can be fun and it's free. Going bowling is a great parent/kid activity. Sign up to volunteer at a food bank bagging and stocking shelves. If you are looking to stay home what about a friendly competition on Wii if you have one, we LOVE having bowling competitions.
You and your son can sit down together and pick a different activity every week or every other. Put put it on the calendar and be sure to do it.

Have him join a Cub Scout group in your area. They can be found everywhere. Ask about you being the den mother for his scout pack. It is once a week meetings and they boys learn so much, and gain such strong self confidence. Just a thought. Good luck

Bowling would be so much fun. I would love to do that with my kids. Right now we only do it on the Wii.

Golf lesson would be fun as long as he is game for that. Otherwise going to the park to play catch, frisbee, bike riding to get a smoothie (if a place like that is close by), go to the zoo. Have fun!

My 6 y/o DS loves to play soccer. I signed him up to play on a team and I volunteered to be Assistant Coach. My son thought that was SO cool that HIS Mom would be coaching his team. It is really neat too because he looks at me a lot during games and smiles. I can tell he's thinking...my Mom is really great =-)

The other suggestions you've received are really good. One thing my DS and I love doing together are nature walks and going to the park to play football, soccer, frisbee, freeze tag, hide & seek, etc. We also cuddle quite a bit.

Oh and water balloon fights are always a hit too!

I enjoy reading books together at night before bed with my kids. Even though he can read to himself, that doesn't mean he wouldn't enjoy hearing you read to him and sitting close.
