Acid reflux...when Medicine Doesn't Work

Hi mammas,
My sweet little five month-old baby boy has been diagnosed with acid reflux. Apparently, he has quite a nasty case of reflux. We're giving him both Prevacid AND Axid, but still has acid flare-ups. We've also tried thickening his food (breastmilk) with formula, rice cereal and oatmeal (not all at once) but none of this seems to make a difference. We also make sure he burps, keep him propped up after eating and when he sleeps. He's OK for a week or two and then has another flare up. We're going on day five of his current flare up and it seems to be getting worse. He's in so much pain and isn't eating as much as he should. Has anyone out there had a similar experience? Any advice?

What can I do next?

Hi my daughter had it bad and still has some spitting up at 2. It is acid reflux, she has no allgeries. Have you tried uping his meds. Has he gained weight? If yes then he needs his meds. uped. Get him weighed...every little bit counts. Also, work are recently worked for me is giving meds. at least 30 mins. before a feeding. I never did this until I saw a GI and he told me that I had to and it worked. Have you seen a GI, I wait until my daughter was 18 months and that was tooooo long. The GI also asked why I waited so long. It can only help. If you need a good one I've got one. Hope this helps.

Hi!
He sounds JUST like my daughter(now 7 months old)--I know the pain you (and he) are going through. We finally went to see a GI specialist(when she was 5 months old). After doing an upper GI to rule out abnormalities(there were none) we doubled her Prevacid and she is a COMPLETELY different baby. Sweet, content, and not in pain. Within 2 days of the increase she could sleep not propped up! If you have any questions please e-mail me at ____@____.com I know how tough Reflux is and am thrilled she finally has the relief she needed!

Good Luck!
L.

If you are into homeopathic remedies, you can try silica 6x. You take it and it gets excreted into your breastmilk. I noticed it worked better then the zantac my twins were on.

My son started taking Axid for GERD/acid reflux at 4 months. He was breast fed so upon the advice of a La Leche League leader, I also gave up all dairy, caesin and eggs. After 30 days of me being dairy and egg free we saw a big improvement. Any time I would sample any foods with dairy or eggs in them, he would spit up and cry. Being on such a strict diet was hard but I managed by reading labels and seeking out vegan restaurants since vegans don't eat dairy. I also shopped in the Kosher section at the grocery store to find item that were dairy free. My son outgrew the GERD at 13 months. He has been off the Axid since April 20. He drinks cow's milk and eats yoghurt without any problems now. And, now that I can eat anything I want, food has never tasted so good! When reading labels, look for milk, cream, butter, caesin, eggs, cheese, yoghurt, and sour cream. Formula has dairy in it by the way and I believe it is more likely to aggravate GERD babies than breast milk. Best of luck, I hope your little one feels better soon.

I can't say I have personal experiance in this, but could food allergies be an issue? A mom in our LLL had to eliminate foods and give prevacid for her little guy to finally stop throwing up all the time. Even if no allergies, maybe if you try to avoid eating common heartburn causing or gassy foods it would help? I know if I ate beans or something like that, My little guy would be in horrible gas pain.

Have you tried a round of probiotics? sometimes a lack of good bacteria in the intestines will cause acid reflux from what I have read. If born c-section, they miss some of the important digestive enzymes that are passed in the birth canal. BabyFlora by Renew Life on www.smartbomb.com is a great one. I gave to my daughter when she was ready for a bottle at 4wks and she's only been sick once (a cold from her dad) in her first 9m of life! It will take a few weeks to notice a change, but it definitely will not hurt him, only help make his immune system stronger. Good luck!
