OK now i'm at a loss on what to get my 8 yr. old he wants a Nintendo DS3D so I went to look at these seen it on display it is very fragile many have come back returned because of the switch that goes from normal to 3D mode plus just seeing it in 3D it is going to mess with your eys & balance. So then I checked into the WII it will be for him & family there are many games to choose from.I however am not a big fan of games I hate seeing someone on a game system wasting their time instead of doing soemthing else.If I do get this there will be rules like anything else am I wrong for buying him a game system then expect him to only play it when it is allowed I don't think so.My kids will not develop the couch potato habit.I can hear the never ending argument sof I had that first I want to play with this game not that game mom he took it away from me yada yada yada, then mom will pull the plug regret I bought it then store it in the attic.A big part of me tell's me not to buy this, but they are kids & want things like this.
What other items are for 8 yr olds I have looked & looked I did buy him a BOP IT,there will be more games,he doesn't need clothes or shoes, books I buy year around, pogo stick he mentioned that
I will look into these beyblades...I would like to buy the Wii but in this family we share no mater who's present it was it would end up in the living room where the TV is no TVs are allowed to be put in the childrens rooms so not having everyone play with it isn't an option.LEGOS & other items mentioned we have,I bought him a BOP IT well I have my list now all I need to do is head out thanks ladies
We had a great party I did buy the Nintendo DSlite he loves it....

If you were going to go with the Wii for the family, I would wait until Christmas and give it as a family gift. If he gets it for his birthday, he'll never completely feel like it was a family gift being it was given on his birthday.
You say pogo stick, so I take it he might like this that I am going to suggest. My neighbor got her son one for his birthday and I believe he turned 8 or 9. My nephew who turns 8 in October was loving it also!!
A Razor RipRider 360 Caster Trike
How about a Leapster? Get the video gaming component - is super duper durable (my 2 year old drops her brothers on the floor CONSTANTLY) and the games are all educational but use fun cool cartoon characters. My 7 year old has had one for 2 or 3 years now and he still plays with it.
we also have hte wii and that goes through phases - sometimes he wants to play all the time - other times it will sit unused for months. he does not take good care of it though and i can tell it won't be long before it no longer works at all. in my world that means bye bye wii it will also NOT be replaced.
Another thought is the gift of experience - karate lessons, gymnastics, pool memberships - etc...good luck.
have you looked at beyblades? They are all the rage now with my son and all his older cousins and friends who are about 8-9, not my son he is 6 and loves them. my son also got the dregdar(sp) balls and tracks and so far he likes those. A regular dsi instead of the 3d one???? some kids need rules on game play and others dont. We have 2 ds's a wii and a ps3 and id say that between all three of them there is only an hour or two a week of play time and that is their choice. they really use them in the car on trips, such a lifesaver!!!!
Try:
Moon Shoes (kids dig these, great exercise too)
Old fashioned games like, Operation, Connect 4, rubiks cube, etc...
Nerf toys
Whoopie cushion
Magic tricks
My son lived and breathed Legos at that age!
I second the Beyblades. My ten year old son is nuts about them and has competitions with his friends. He also likes Transformers and Legos. We also have the WII which he plays with occasionally. Happy Birthday to your son!
My nine year old loves bey blades and legos. Another thing he saw and liked was the Mario Kart K'nex set...it looks kind of cool.
