I live in New Jersey and it is almost 60 degrees out side, I have a almost 2 week old baby I want to take him on a walk but im not sure if it warm enough out or if he is too little. i havent taken him outside because it has been cold but he needs some fresh air what is the advice. I know if i do take him out he needs to still be dressed warmly but is it too soon?

Go outside!!! You both need it! The baby is 2 weeks old, not 2 days old. Put on the warmest sleeper pj's you've got for the baby, wrap him up in a blanket and sit him in his stroller/carriage. If you feel that it's too hot out for all the clothing/wraps, open up the blanket, and zip down the sleeper about an inch or so. keep an eye on him. Feel his face if its hot, he's probably feeling too hot. 60 degrees is definitely not too cold to go out. Just don't be out for long. Take it in strides. You'll both feel better getting out of the house.
Have fun!

Heck yes -- Get outside mom. After this winter of snow storms, 60 degrees is nearly tropical. Put some layers on your little one and some blankets. Too be honest, you'll find out pretty quickly that babies are little heaters and actually are more likely to be overdressed than underdressed.

They say for a newborn to dress him one layer more than you're wearing because they can't regulate their own body temp yet-- plus if you think it's nippy oiutside then wrap him in a blanket, too. Be sure to protect him from the sun because it's easy to forget how strong the sun's rays are when it's chilly out. It's not too early to give him fresh air. Just keep him away from strangers who may want to touch him and breathe on him!

It's fine. If you are really worried about how warm he is, carry him in a sling next to your body--it'll keep both him and you warm :D

Hi R.,

I live in NJ too - I have a 23 month old, and a 1 month old, and also would like to take advantage of this weather!!! I am 37, so on the older side to have kids this young, so maybe that is why I am so laid back -

I do not think it is too early to take your son outside. I would just make sure his ears are covered - I worry about the cool wind. From what I have read over the months, and heard from my pediatrician, babies, no matter what age, can be dressed how you would be dressed for the weather, plus one additional layer. Their body temperature is probably regulated by the time you leave the hospital after delivery.

Plus, your son will let you know if he is too cold/hot etc. I like to put a blanket over the stroller to block the wind, and bring extra blankets just in case it is colder than you think it was. Don't worry...enjoy the weather this week. The way this winter has been, we will probably be under more snow before we see spring.

Take care,
L.

No, it's not too soon. As long as it's not freezing (or ozone alert if you have a summer newborn), they can be taken outside from day one. I took my babies outside immediately. There's no reason they cannot be out of doors.

I was told by our pediatrician to dress a baby as warmly as we would dress ourselves or our other children. He said that so often we tend to overheat them which can cause more of a problem with the sweating then being chilly again once the clothing/coats/etc are removed. He told me this because w/my oldest I would have her dressed like she was on a trip to the Artic! I would always carry along a blanket in the stroller just incase and if you can put a blanket over the any spaces that would allow cool air in. Good luck!

hi R., listen it's definately not too early to take your baby for a walk. just bundle him up really well and stroll out for a little bit. my obgyn told us once our daughter was a month old we could start taking her to restaurants and the mall, but nor before. so i took her in the stroller for a 15 min walk and then came home, before she was a month old! i hope this helps! best of luck, M.

I have lived in NE my whole life and can assure that a child will be fine outside if t is above freezing and they are dressed well. Use layers to add or take away if needed.

Dress him warmly (long pants, long sleeve shirt, socks (always) a light jacket with a hat) & put him in a front carrier then cover him with a blanket & tuck between you k& his feet so the wind won't blow on them. You can let his face poke out to get fresh air & your body heat & his clothing should keep him warm enough. If his fingers or face feel too cool take him back in the house. I don't think I would put him in a stroller at that temperture/age yet. It is 63 degrees here in Salina, KS & I don't even need a jacket, but the wind is not blowing either. I think a short walk will be refreshing for both of you even if it is only 5 minutes!

I hope this helps!

God bless!

Put him in an extra layer more than you would have on and give him a little hat and he's good to go!! Just try not to get him in crowds, but taking a nice walk in this lovely weather should be perfect for you and him! Make sure YOU take it easy and don't overdo it because you are still recovering yourself! I took my daughter out right away for walks (she was born in late April). I remember I had the opposite problem b/c it was SO HOT and I wasn't sure I could take her out in the heat! I did learn that the extra layer rule doesn't really apply in the summer. I saw all these newborns with sweaters on even though it was about 95 degrees out in NYC!!
Enjoy the nice weather!

A child can be taken out in cold weather as long as he/she is wrapped up. I took my baby for a walk every day in the 40s. You need the fresh air, too! Babies' hands and feet often feel cool to the touch; feel the back of their neck to find out if they are cool/hot/just right. Put him in a cute outfit with feet covered - maybe a light cotton hat to keep his heat in. Enjoy!!! Go to a park to see other moms. You need people time and the baby is bound to be happier on the go for a while, too!

I think it is def. ok. Just make sure the baby is dressed appropriately, with a hat, and make sure that there is not direct wind on the baby, or direct sun, and you are good to go. It is great to get both yourself and the baby some fresh air.

I took my son for a walk as soon as we got home from the hospital. It was middle of March and the weather suddenly got up to 55 degrees in Michigan. No way was I wasting that! Just make sure you keep a hat on the head and bring an extra blanket if needed. Have fun!
