My son has had a cough for over a month and i thought it was just because he was teething and wasn't drooling, so he was probable chocking on his spit. i took in to the DR. and he gave him an inhaler but that didn't help, well i couldn't really tell a difference. Then he seemed to be getting worse do i took him back and the DR. did a chest X ray and their was a spot on his lung but the couldn't really tell if it was pneumonia they also said it could be a sinus infection he is on antibiotics just in case. Dose this happen to alot of kids? Any Advice or thoughts?

So What Happened?

Ok. Over the weekend my son started wheezing so i had to take him to urgent care and they gave him more antibiotics and an albuteral breathing treatment. Which helped. I took him earlier this week back to his doctor and he was asking more questions on how the albuerterol was working i i din;t see and improvement. But he wanted to make sure so they did another breathing tx. anywasy it worked THANK GOD! but he was diagnosed with pneumonia and bronciolitis. He is feeling much better after i learned how to give in inhaler the right way. now he is starting to get his energy back and taking again. tnks to all of you who responded it really helped :)

Usually when a doc suspects pneumonia in a child this young they don't get sent home because it's too dangerous. I'd get a second opinion.

It is vital that you do not vaccine your baby until you 1) figure out what is going on - get another doctor and 2) you do the research on vaccines. This is not normal to have a spot and a doctor not do anything about it. Does your baby have any skin conditions or has had any ear infections? You don't say whethter you are nursing or not. Add a probiotic into your routine and remove all dairy, eggs from your diet if so.

Next I would start my research with Healing the New Childhood Epidemics: Autism, ADHD, Asthma, and Allergies: The Groundbreaking Program for the 4-A Disorders, by Dr. Kenneth Bock and then continue with:

The Vaccine Book, by Dr. Robert Sears

What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Childhood Vaccinations, by Dr. Stephanie Cave

Evidence of Harm, by David Kirby

ok this could be pnumonia BUT it could also be asthma. my daughter was sick for about 2 months with a nasty cough that was very wet. she got put on a albuterol inhaler that didnt help much (3-4 times a day). she eventually got put on a nebulizer and got pulmicort (a preventative 0.25) and albuterol for the nebulizer. she started to emprove then got bad again and she got a liguid 3 day steriod that cleard her right up. ask yourself this does your baby cough worse at night? if yes then it could be asthma. this could eb allergy induced or illness induced asthma. my daughters is illness induced so if she gets a cold this is what i have to do- start treatments - albuterol 4xs a day and double her pulmicort dose to .50 (shes gets .25 everyday). also i run a cool mist humidifier in her room.
keep taking him back to the dr until they reach a conclusion. also a big fyi about asthma is that you dont have to weeze to have it. my daughter has weezed ONCE and it was soo quiet the dr almost didnt hear it.
good luck i hope your lil one gets better soon.

Vaporizer. I know the trend for years has moved from warm moist air to cold moist air. However, if you can find second hand a warm vaporizer, you will find it gets used a lot. Just be sure to clean it well after use.

When you take a shower and it is steamy, bring your baby in to take advantage of the steam as well.

You may even want to simmer slowly plain water, just to add moisture in the air which will help his coughing immensely. It will do no harm until the doc finds out what is going on.

Hi R.,

A couple of things... I know Pneumonia sounds serious, and it definitely can be. It's also not that uncommon in young children. You do want to make sure that he is getting plenty of rest and taking the antibiotics. The only way to really treat it is with rest and antibiotics. That can happen at home, or, if it gets more serious, you would definitely want him admitted so that the doctors can keep a closer eye on him, make sure he is hydrated and breathing well.
Some other good remedies to help keep him comfortable are steam showers in the bathroom with eucalyptus oil. You can buy the oil at whole foods and then put a few drops in the shower while you let the bathroom steam up. This will help open his air passages and help him breath more comfortably. You can also use a humidifier in the bedroom.
He is still too young to administer other kinds of homeopathic cough remedies.
I also agree with the first poster - get a second opinion. If your doctor cannot tell if it's pneumonia or not, you might want to see someone else who can give you more information.

I hope your little guy is feeling better soon!

Take care,
D.

With such a young baby... don't waste time in giving him the antibiotics. Anytime a baby has a cough, it has to checked out no matter how minor it may seem.
And very important is: what is his cough like? What does it sound like?

If something is wrong, the lung health of a child/adult can be compromised. As an example: my Mom was sick and had this lingering cough. She insisted on just taking natural remedies and not going to the Doctor. Well, finally after about a month, the cough was STILL there and was not getting better and worse.... the Doctor said, she now had IRREVERSIBLE permanent lung damage and it weakened her lungs and lung health (she had to take x-rays too) ...she had bad Bronchitis and she was verging on walking Pneumonia. He wanted to put her in the hospital, but she didn't want to! And yes, she had to take antibiotics. But now, whenever she gets a cold, her lungs are affected since it is now weak.

And yes, a sinus CAN cause secondary infections in the lungs. Since the bacteria in the nasal mucous drips down the throat etc. THIS is what happened to me once... I had a head cold/sinus type cold. It took a long time to go away.... THEN, I started getting a cough and mucous... it lingered. I went to the Doctor and she told me I had a secondary infection now.... from the sinus infection I had previously...and I had a bad bout of Bronchitis combined with my Asthma... and I had to take Prednisone and inhalers & antibiotics at that point.

A cough is nothing to fool around with, especially in babies, the young and elderly.

I would get a 2nd opinion AND insist on a proper diagnosis. No hemming & hawing about it.

take care,
Susan

Ok I would watch him VERY carefully. What does the cough sound like? My son in Feb. started off with a cold then got a dry hacking cough for 2-3 weeks then had an aweful cough that sounded like wet gasping cough then started throwing up from coughing so hard this lasted 3 months they said asthma he went to 5 different doctors finally I insisted he be tested for pertussis and he was positive. Pertussis is very dangerous especially for infants and doctors think it isn't around anymore well it is. Google "whooping cough" you can here what it sounds like and if you think this could be it insist they test him he will need a certain antibiotic to help but it will last a long time we are 4 months in and he finally is over it except if he starts laughing a lot then he will STILL cough. Moms know when something isn't right trust your instinct and keep taking him to the doctor until they "know" what is wrong. Good luck!!
