My SIL is turning 40 at the end of August. I would like to do a surprise bday party for her, on a limited budget of course. Any ideas on inexpensive party and/or party themes? I have envisioned a nice party with friends/family and kids early evening, cooking, eating, exchanging gifts and then move into something more adult in the evening? Any ideas would be appreciated! Thanks!

What can I do next?

For my brother's 40th, I made an invitation using a picture of him when he was a kid. We had childhood/early adult photos displayed as table decorations. If I'd had the time, I was going to make posters of major or funny things in the news from his birth year. Not an 'over the hill' banner in sight.

No need for a theme here... your idea is great! If you really want a theme- Luau is usually easy to do and inexpensive for people to "dress" in theme! Foods can be easy too:
- Pinepple
- Pulled Pork
- Fruity drinks
Google "Luau" foods and see what you can find!

You could also do a '70's theme DISCO FEVER! Could be fun, but not so sure it would be kid-friendly!

backyard bbq with twinkling white christmas lights in the trees and along the back fence. on the invite, ask everyone to bring a dish that either represents her, reminds them of her, or is one that they have shared with her at some point. You will get some crazy fun foods. Plan on making some dogs and burgers and let the rest be fun stuff other people bring. plan a sitter at a neighbors house or upstairs to send the kids too at dark-thrirty

My best friend's husband and my husband turn 40 within a month of each other. We are going to be surprising them by renting out a roller skating rink, inviting all their friends and family, getting a DJ, lots of food and drink, and having the best. surprise. party. EVER.

I second the suggestion of a luau. You can get all the decorations you need from the dollar store. It's fun for the kids and adults. Plus everyone gets to dress casual. You can even go hit up the thrift shop for some hawaiin shirts.

Plus for beverages you get to serve silly little umbrellas. I'm sure everyone will enjoy themselves young and old alike.
