I am struggling on this. I would like to start Christmas shopping for him now so I can spread the spending out! Ha! He is really into superheros, loves the iPad, has a 4 wheeler type kid ride on that he loves...
What are you guys getting your 4 year old boys?

What about some dress up clothes to make him a super hero? You could also get or make him a fleece blanket with superheros on it. My son has one his grandma made with dogs and he absolutely loves it.
Does he have a bike?
Legos, Legos, Legos. The Imaginext Batcave and characters mentioned below are also a very good suggestion - gave that to my son last year and he still LOVES it. A Hippity-hop for outside. Dress-up things like hats, masks, pretend foam swords, etc.
So far this year I have bought my nearly 5-year old a mini air hockey table from Land of Nod and an old record player off of eBay (we still have all my old kiddie records and I think he might get a kick out of operating the player himself). He is also interested in another big Imaginext set - not sure yet which one to pick out.
My guy will be four in November and here are the things he and his 4-5 year old friends love:
Stomp Rocket-found it on amazon.com for under 15 bucks, huge hit with girls and boys from 1 1/2 to 6 or so.
Marble run-one of those toys you can take apart and rebuild over and over hundreds of ways. We got a plastic one, it was more reasonably priced, but there are great wooden ones too.
Automoblox cars (mini)-these are cool little wooden cars with lots of parts that come off and are interchangeable with other cars in the set. We have 2 now, and will probably get another one or 2 in Christmas stocking. Again, amazon.com has these for less than anywhere else I've seen.
Motor Works by Discovery Toys-this is a set of motorcycle, plane and racecar with a working drill and toolbox. The toys (plane etc) all come apart and can be put back together with the drill. My son saw this a few months ago and still talks about how cool it is. I bought it for his birthday.
Hope that helps!
Legos. He sound like an outside type of boy. What about a huge dump truck for the dirt or back hoe?
Leapfrog has a new Ipad type of toy for kids. Love their products!
The "Cars 2" dvd is coming out in November and there's a Mickey Mouse Blast-off Spaceship that my almost 4.5 year old WAAAANTS badly.
He's getting the Spaceship next month when my "Bonus Mom" is in town and we're having a surprise Christmas for her.
Ooh, definately go with the Imaginext Batcave. My sons got it 2 years ago and still like it. It's pretty cool. My 3 and a half year old daughter likes it too :)
My son is now 8 but at that age he LOVED the Imaginext toys from Fisher Price http://www.fisher-price.com/fp.aspx?st=900000&e=store...
He still has the batman cave and loves playing with it at 8:) My son also loved his scooter (I bought the Radio Flyer brand, the footboard is wider and easier to master).
And of course Toy Story and Cars jammies from the Disney Store were a huge hit.
