My 5yo son had his tonsils out on Monday. He did awesome that day, but by today, he can hardly talk. I'm having a hard time getting him to drink but we are doing our best. Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what did you do?

What can I do next?

The 3rd and 4th day were the worst for my son. Make sure he drinks his water and takes his meds!!!! Ty refused water/meds from his Dad so when I got home from work he was in pain and his throat hurt and was very dry. He ended up puking up a bunch of blood. It would not have happened had he kept his tonsils/throat moist. Try cold/ice water. It will help with the swelling and the pain. Now is when the odor is the worst too.
It will get better in a day or two!

My 4 year old had his tonsils out last summer. It did get worse before it got better. They told us he didn't have to drink a ton at once, but small sips very often. He was so miserable we let him watch A LOT of tv, but it kept him calm, because whining and crying you don't want, can break the stitch and cause bleeding. Try offering small sips, but offer often, also try a smoothie. My son never had one before and I bought some specifically for after his surgery. He really enjoyed those. Literally a sip or two every 15 minutes. My son got so into watching tv, that I would just go up to him with his drink and straw and he would just do it. Getting him comfortable was the hardest....he wanted to cry and whine but we did everything so he wouldn't. Good luck and stay calm. We had to bite our tongue a lot!

My daughter had hers out in June, When her ENT said she would be 'down for 7-10 days', I thought it was a joke, but she sure was down, she got a lot worse before better! Not sure if they told you, but I actually called the ENT office bc my daughters breath was horrible!!, also a side effect of the surgery! My daughter wouldn't eat anything but jello and ice pops, if your son's not drinking, push the ice pops! I wish him a speedy recovery!

3rd and 4th day are almost always the worst after any surgery/injury - he'll probably turn the corner really soon. if you have infection concerns, call the DR - but it's probably just the normal healing process. hope he feels better really soon!

I agree with the post so far. My daughter acted like nothing had happened the first few days & I thought "Why is she home from school?" Then she got worse (on day 6 she actually threw up & the DR told me that was not uncommon). Anyway, the one thing that helped her (in addition to sipping drinks & popcicles) was ice packs on the outside of her neck. It helps with the inflamation, especially if they are not drinking much. Good-Luck!
