35 Weeks Along MD Closed Practice Suddenly and No Dr. Will See Me!

I am 22 years old and my Dr. closed her practice suddenly and dissapeared. I gave the office a request to transfer records and now the company that is handling the records cannot find them, so therefore my new Dr. refuses to see me without records. I'm perfectly healthy with no gestational diabetes or anything wrong with the baby but what am I supposed to do? I have tried for 2 weeks to find the records to no avail. What if I go into labor? Can I go to a clinic for the time being? I'm just at a loss as to what to do. Any ideas?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the quick responses and advice. After a month and a million phone calls the company in charge of my records found them and I physically went and picked them up. I now can see my new Doctor at St. Luke's on the plaza and hopefully finish up this pregnancy stress free...:-)

As far as your records, try contacting the lab that actually performed the tests. I'ld be pretty sure that an outside lab performed the test. (In Wichita, its probably AMS.) This is also true if you had an ultrasound done somewhere besides your OB office. I also ditto the calling the hospital where you plan to deliver. Standard pratice at my OBs office is to fax in lab and H&P by 32 weeks.

As far as getting in to be seen, try the OB clinics. Any large teaching hospital will have them. You will probably see a resident for most of your care, but normally they do a great job. Good luck and email if you need recommendations in the Wichita area.

Oh I feel for you! That is such a shock and so scary. I'm so glad you're not having any complications and you'll likely have a nice uncomplicated delivery too, so keep your chin up! Did you register at a certain hospital where you had planned to deliver? They cannot turn you away (actually, no hospital can). They all have a house "OB" on call if you don't have a doc of your own, so don't worry, there will be doc for you there if you go into labor! In the meantime...I think a clinic would be ok for the interim while you continue to look for a new OB. You might also ask for advice on what to do from the L&D unit at a local hospital. They may know if other docs who can help you out. Maybe if you agree to sign a waiver at a new OB's office not holding them responsible for the info they don't have...while they try to update a record for you (ie. blood type, RH status, GBS status, other bloodwork, blood pressure/diabetes status, ultrasounds, etc.) Make sure you explain to the other OB offices what has happened, not that you've just left your current OB on your own (what you are dealing with is called "Medical abandonment" and is ILLEGAL!)
Hang in there and I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for you that all works out quickly!

Hello N.!

I am so sorry for what happened! I would be more than hacked off. I completely agree with calling around to hospitals. Try this one, it's called For Women Only. It's in the Medical Plaza right next to Overland Park Regional. They are really nice there. Explain to them what happened and what is going on. Their number is ###-###-####. However I don't advise just going to the ER when in labor. Yes they have to take you, but not all ER/hospitals are equipped with labor and delivery. the hospital i work at does not have one. we have had a few girls come in and we can stabalize and if need be deliver if we can't get them transferred to an equipped facility. I hope this helps. also, try calling the Better Business Buerau. See if they can find out anything at all about your records.

Call the Board of Healing Arts (number below). Weird name for what they do, but doctors must supply this board with their contact information or else their license is at jeopardy. Usually they'll only give you an address, so it might not be that helpful, but ask them who you should contact. Records go with the doctor so if someone could contact the doctor, your records should be easier to get a hold of. I'm a lawyer & everytime we're looking for a doctor this is the first place we call. They also have a website.

Try Dr. Daut Gjoni at Cameron Regional Medical Center. His office is in the hospital and he is in the book. He accepts Medicaid. I'm sorry for your trouble especially so close to your delivery date. I hope this information helps you. God bless and good luck.

There is NO reason that another practice should refuse to see you, old records or not!! Call another office and report the doctor that you are trying to see to the Missouri board of medicine! If you go into labor, go to the emergency room, they have to see you; it is federal law. Asj around and start calling other offices. Explain the situation. You could even try calling the hospital you were pplanning to use and ask them for help! Hang in there, it'll all be ok and you will get a beautiful baby in the end!

Hi N.,
Surely there is an OB practice somewhere that would take you. Check with the Hospital that your OB was on staff, where you were originally scheduled for delivery. If a Dr. suddenly "bailed" the other Drs. will know about it and could surely advise, because those patients would have to be "absorbed" somewhere. Was your Dr. in a joint practice with others or alone? St. Luke's has a "nurse line" and I think they assist in referrals. Call all the hospitals in the area that have OB departments, ie, Overland Park Regional, North KC, Truman, Shawnee Mission, etc., so you don't end up in some emergency room for delivery. If you had an ultrasound or testing outside your drs. office, there would be a record there, though may not be complete, it might help.
I feel for you, my dentist bailed and took all records, but pregnancy is way different in the realms of practice, of course. Good luck and have many joys with the new baby, which will be here soon.

First of all, don't freak out and get stressed. It is not good for you or the baby. If you go into labor, just go to the ER, they will admit you and there is a Dr on staff to deliver you. So no worries there. I would just call all the OB/GYN's in the area and tell them the situation and see if they will see you. Do you havea a primary care Dr? Because lots of times they will have copies of the records as well as your OB.

Wow. That's not a fun place to be in.
Everybody is so worried about getting sued these days...What about what people need? I'd suggest going to the hospital where you had planned to deliver and see what they can tell you. If they are going to be responsible when you come in in-labor, then surely they would rather set you up with someone to be checked than to have you suddenly come in with no history at all.
I'd make a list of what you know and talk to an attorney. You can call for free advice. Maybe this isn't technically illegal, but it is definately wrong.
Good luck. Let us know how this works out for you. Happy Baby.

I moved here when I was 8 months pregnant and my old doctor told me that dr's cannot refuse to treat you when you are pregnant. Try my doctor's practice - they have several doctors there. Explain the situation and one of them should be able to see you. Good luck.
