I hope somebody can help me, give me advice or anything.... I am pregnant with my second child. I am 12 weeks pregnant. My 3 yo was born with hydrocephlaus, he is shunted but has no delays and is normal and happy. However b/c of this and b/c I am 36 yo, I am under strict care. I just had my first trimester screening. Its called a nuchal translucensy test. Has anybody had this before? The doctor told me he woldnt be able to give any results for at least 3 days and my OB would do it. After him checking my belly for about 30 minutes and watching my baby flip around in their, he says...Listen, I have something to tell you. My baby has extra fluid between his neck and placenta which makes the test positive for some kind of chromosonal defect. After what we went thrugh my son 3 years ago my world turned upside down. Next week I have CVS test that will give definitive results. I am really scared. I dont know what to excpect..who does? But is there anybody who is going through this or has gone through this?
Thanks for your time.
Sorry I havent written but I wanted to give a complete update on my situation. I had an amniocentesis on March 10. I got the results today. After going through so many ups and downs, from joy to sadness to acceptance, from missing work, crying at work, coming home from work and lying in bed crying, I got the best news EVER! The doctor calls me and tells me the results are PERFECTLY NORMAL. Im having a boy! Im so happy, of course I do know there is always a chance of something else happening but right now I am on cloud nine with my family. Thank you all for your support and prayers!

I am sorry that I do not have any experience or expertise on this. But I just want to tell you that I am praying for you and your little one. No matter what, that little life is a blessing and has a purpose for existing. Many of these "definitive" tests end up being wrong anyway. I'm sorry for the despair and worry you are feeling. Hopefully you will get good news so that you don't have to spend your pregnancy worrying, possibly unnecessarily.
A friend of mine recently went through a similar situation. She lost a baby well into her previous pregnancy and after finding out her next baby had a similar chromosomal defect she considered aborting the pregnancy and ending the life inside of her. This decision was really cemented when she met another woman who completed a pregnancy with similar issues and her now 3 year old has a very poor quality of life and has been in the hospital numerous times, needing resuscitation and all sorts of tests and surgeries. She admitted she loves her daughter more than anything in the universe but if she had to do it again she would abort to save the baby from suffering.
I know this is an amazingly hard decision that brings up all kinds of moral issues but if you chose to do something like that you are not the only one. That is why there is technology in the world. Some people need that, some don't. It's not fair and it's not easy.
Good luck!

Hi D.:
In order to give you and your baby the best possible chance good at health, I would suggest that you visit naet.com and order the book "Say Good-Bye to Illness." I have read the book and there were many case studies reported in there that resulted in my having a gut feeling that this is an avenue worth your pursuing. You can find an NAET certified doctor through the website. I (and 2 of my grand children) go to Dr. David Karaba in Fullerton and absolutely love him. His phone number is ###-###-####.
Here is a synopsis on the book:
Say Good-bye to illness, 3rd Edition:

Hi...I had a similar experience with an abnormal nuchal fold test...it turned out that the combination of blood work with the measurement gave them a better percentage of what could be wrong...so, we did the amnio cause i was a day late for the cvs and everything if fine...i have a beautiful 7 month old daughter who is perfectly healthy..when i got the NT test they told me this could mean downs or heart problems and i was freaking out...she was also my second...i have a 3 1/2 year old boy at home too...all my worrying was a big waste of time as there is nothing wrong with her..hope this helps and if you want to talk further i can be reached at ____@____.com
good luck,
N.
First off, please try to relax. The stress is not good for you or your baby. I am not sure what could be going on inside with your little one, but I hope and pray everything will turn out okay. If you pray, do so, and believe God will answer you. I hope everything works out, and some things do work themselves out by the time the little one comes. I have a friend who was told bad news at the begining of the pregnancy, and during the whole time it keeps changing. Their attitude now is that whatever happens, happens, and they will love their little one. At this point, it also looks like there may not be anything wrong! :-)
Good luck, and best wishes.
not to say that it might be something, but don't get too anxious until you know for sure! i say this because i was told that it looked like my baby had the same thing in the womb, and i had to get extra tests, and they talked about the nuchal translucency thing, but in the end everything tested normal, so all the anxiety it caused me and my husband were for nothing! my little guy came out and he was PERFECT in every way (now almost 4yo). good luck.
The nuchal translucency test measures the fold on the back of the baby's neck. They correlate that with your hormones at the time to see if your baby might have down's syndrome. Results are usually given in about 7 days.
Because I'm 38, I had it done too. If I had had any indication of down's syndrome, I would have done an amnio to be 100%.
My husband and I struggled with whether to abort or not if the baby did have any chromosomal problems. It's a hard, personal decision.
Good luck
My sister is a genetic counselor. I recommend you finding one that you can talk to. Most people don't realize what exactly their job is, but from their title, they counsel. The CVS testing will give you more answers. But getting in touch with a genetic counselor will help you through the ordeal. They are trained to counsel you through this in a way a doctor may not be able to and have lots of knowledge about various disorders/diseases/chromosomal defects etc.
I am so sorry you are going through this. I did not experience this, but I just wanted to tell you what I have read. These tests can produce alot of false negatives. That basically means they say something could be wrong when it is not. I would do the CVS to make sure everything is okay, but in the meantime don't stress mama. No good can come of stress and everything may be fine. Worry about "what if" when it happens. Sorry I can't say more to comfort you. Hugs ((((()))))
Trust God and Check with your OB . They have test that can rule out many abnormalities
Well D all i can say to you is PRAY for a miracle God can do anything. If this baby is meant to be here it shall. Trust in him. He is able and can do all things. Go ahead and have your next test and see what they tell you but make sure you Talk to god first and also what does your husband want to do both of you make your decision together. I wish you all the best and i will include you all in my thoughts and prayers.
hi D.
first off, i just want to tell you how sorry i am that you are going through this. try to stay positive and hope for the best. i went through something similar prior to my two children being born. i was 21 weeks pregnant and went in for my structural ultrasound/nuchal and found out the i was carrying a very sick baby. she had downs as well as a malformed heart. it was by far the hardest thing i have ever been through. i chose to terminate the pregnancy for the sake of the baby. it was horrible and heartbreaking but i couldn't bare to bring a child into the world to suffer tremendously the was she would have. i hope and pray that you will not have to cross this bridge. if you do however- you too will be okay and will go on to have another baby. i am beyond blessed with my son (3 years old) and my new girl (7 months). i thought i would never see the day when i would be so lucky to have these two children in my life! if you need to talk to me personally- please feel free to email me. good luck and please try to stay positive.

It is so hearwarming to see so many positive and caring comments from other moms here!! I had a similar situation where I was scared out of my mind with all the testing and "special care" I received while pregnant with my first and only child. My doctor was so cold and clinical and never reassured me about anything - which is why I no longer go to her!
If it helps at all - my son's tests came back showing he would have spina bifida (high chance of definitely happening) and downs syndrome (moderate chance). His head always measured at least 2 weeks further along in growth than the rest of his body parts.
He is now a healthy 2 year old with a somewhat larger head than some kids his age (we tell him because God wanted to fit as much smarts in is brain as possible and so it made his brain and his head a little bigger).
Best wishes for a healthy and worry free pregnancy as much as possible because the stress these doctors put on us causes our bodies to react negatively and that's not good for our little beans trying to grow and develop. Just keep reminding yourself that you have one beautiful and wonderful child and you are fortunate to become pregnant with another baby who will ultimately be as loved and special in your life as your first. They are both lucky to have a mom who cares about their wellbeing as much as you do!!
