my 21m old has been a great sleeper and a fabulous napper... she sleeps from 7;30 -7, and her naps are usually from 11;30-2 ( i gotta get my other one from school at 2;30).. Never a problem... All of a sudden, for about a week now, she's had a really hard time napping... it takes her an hour, hour and a half sometimes, and there's been incidents where she's just in her crib for 2 hours, talking, singing, and NOT SLEEPING... the afternoons are a dissaster, he's exhausted, i've got both of them, and we're all miserable... I know its a little too early for her to drop her nap, and i NEED the nap... i cant be without a nap (and neither can she)... whats going on with her? what can i do to make it easier????
and please, dont suggest that she's 'dropping' her nap... its way too early and waaaaay not possible to have a descent day without her napping... thanks...

What can I do next?

My son dropped his naps at about 12 months....he did the same thing, played, babbled, or just fought it. But if I did get him down he was up all during the night......Good luck. I still miss naps somedays and he is almost 4...lol

move the nap a bit later in the day.. she is not tired when you put her down.. of course that means thenap will be shorter.. so bedtime moves up to 7 pm..

I think your schedule is the problem. She's not ready to nap at 1130. My 2 year old does not get sleepy until 1 or 130 if he's up at 630 or so. You should try moving it later. What about when you get home from pick up for a short one hour nap? My niece at the same age naps in the car when getting big sister from pre school. Maybe a car seat nap? Does not help you rest though!

She is older now and at the 'cusp' of an age change, almost 2 years old. This commonly happens at this age.
But yes, she still needs a nap... but I would make it later. Because right now, her naps are according to your pick-up time for your older child... not according to your 21 month olds' tiredness... timing.

For me and my pickup timing for my eldest child... I have had to re-arrange my Son's naps, for AFTER we pick up my Daughter from school. IF he does not before then. And he STILL naps every single day.... he needs it. If he gets NO naps he gets overtired and turns into a Troll.

But no, don't drop the nap.

all the best,
Susan

Hate to break it to you, but her nap days may be coming to an end. :( Our daughter stopped napping altogether between 22-24 months.

I would maybe push the nap to a later time, if she is tired she should be sleeping. In addition to the nap it is okay for her to have an additional rest/quiet time during the day where she reads, plays quietly or talks to herself in bed.

Our little one just went through something similar, we pushed her morning nap up an hour and she gets an additional 30 minutes of quiet time around 4pm--most days she lays in bed talking to her doll/playing and some days she will actually fall asleep for 30-45 minutes. It has really helped us to have a better night until bedtime. Good Luck!
