2 1/2 Year Old Won't Sleep in His Own Bed!

My son is having a hard time sleeping in his bed all night long. He will fall asleep in his bed after I read him a few stories. But atleast 6-7 times a night he comes out of his room crying and he wants to sleep with us. I get up and put him back in bed and he usually falls back to sleep pretty easily. But I am getting very tired of getting up throughout the night. He didn't even wake this much when he was an infant! Has anyone had this sort of problem? Any suggestions would be helpful!! Thanks!

What can I do next?

Hi J.,
My little brother was the same way. We tried everything. You might want to try and get him a special light. My mom bought my brother a light that looks like a fish tank. It makes a little motor noise. I guess they call it white noise (soft to lull you to sleep). It seems to do the trick. He gets up sometimes, but he walks in his sleep so we never know if he is actually awake or sleep walking until we talk to him in the morning.
Good luck.

I tihkn by putting him back to bed you are right on mybe on top of a night light for comfort you could try a babygate in his door if he's going out of his room on his own at least that would stop alittle bit. I also put a fish tank in my 2 1/2 year olds room (up of course) but the light and humming noise from the filter can help and calm a child to sleep, good luck :)

Try a reward system. Give him a sticker for each night he sleeps in his bed and at the the end of the week pick a treat. It works with our 3 year old for just about anything.

I feel your pain! My almost 3 year old (July) would wake up throughout the night, sometimes it was just once to use the bathroom, other times he would wake up 3 or 4 times a night. If I tucked him back in he would go right back to sleep...but the waking up was making be exhausted! He has been much better lately, we have been discussing how he needs to sleep like a good boy and that when he wakes up all the time it is making mommy really tired. Also when I put him to bed at night, I try to go over all the things he would wake up for (you are safe in your bed, mommy is right next door, there are no such things are monsters, that if something wakes him up he needs to turn his music box on and go back to sleep, then I tell him give me one more giant hug and I'll see him in the morning). Also when he would sleep good, I would talk to him about what a good job he did sleeping the next morning. We do have a gate at his door because I know he would be the kid that crawled into bed with us all the time if we didn't!

keep doing what your doing my 3 1/2 yr old is just NOW staying in his bed (my other 2 didn't do this)I used the supper nanny method which is basically what your doing but after the first time of tucking in bed doing the kisses and all after that first time no eye contact and no talking to your child and the times will lessen....be patient is does take time a lot of time but it is worth it..... Mine just slept in his bed for 6 days in a row with out a night waking...
also is he in a toddler bed or a big boy bed? I noticed (could have been a coincidence) that when I moved him to the big boy bed he was sleeping better.....

I have a 3 year old and we were having the same problem, she would wake up at least three times a night. Then I realized that maybe the toddler bed was not enough room for her to sleep, since when she sleeps with us she is all over our queen size bed. So about 2 months ago we went and bought her a full size bed and now she sleeps wonderfully, she hardly ever wakes up in the middle of the night anymore. I didnt know buying a bigger bed could make such a difference. Hope this helps
