18 Mo Old Waking TOO EARLY!

Our 18 month old wakes around 5-5:30 every morning. Aside from mama and dada being exhausted, this wouldn't be a huge problem except that she wakes up tired and fussy. We recently weaned her from the morning nursing session in an attempt to help her sleep longer, but it so far hasn't worked. Also, she cries and screams inconsolably upon waking, will not accept food or drink, and will not go back to sleep, she carries on like this even after she's removed from her bedroom. Nothing seems to work. We are not a cry-it-out family and I'm not sure how well it would work anyway in this situation as at some point we do have to get ready for the coming day (it's not as though we have the whole night in front of us). Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

My daughter was the same way, waking up crabby. We just put her to bed earlier and after a while, she was happier. She still woke at the same time but she wasn't crabby.

She sounds over tired. She may not be going to bed early enough. I know it sounds odd, but if kids do not go to bed early enough, they wake up earlier than they should exhausted. At 18 months kids need about 16 hours of sleep total, I know my dd went to bed at 530 sharp at that age. Now at 3 she goes down at 630. It will take a few weeks for her to get caught up and get used to going to bed earlier, but it is a life saver. Good Luck!
